Schiff: Trump's Wrong; "We Screw Over The World" On Trade

Schiff: Trump's Wrong; "We Screw Over The World" On Trade

Donald Trump’s tariffs split opinion—champions said they were leverage to rebuild U.S. industry, while critics argued they were hidden taxes that raised costs and invited retaliation. At last night’s ZH Debate, Cornell chemistry professor Dave Collum — fresh off his Tucker Carlson controversy — moderated as Peter Schiff and Brent Johnson squared off on trade, tariffs, and the future of the dollar.

Brent is no fan of tariffs but thinks there is some wisdom to Trump’s long-term plan and that the U.S. dollar still reigns supreme. Peter… well all ZH readers know where Peter stands.

Below were the key moments for those short on time:

Trump Has Trade Deficits Wrong

Peter Schiff argued that America’s trade deficits are misunderstood. “It’s actually the other way around,” he said, pushing back on Donald Trump’s claim that the U.S. is being taken advantage of. “We take advantage of the world. They give us goods produced at significant cost in resources, land, labor, capital… and all we do is run off dollars on a printing press, cost us nothing, and we give it to them.”

Brent Johnson responded that this imbalance is exactly what comes with America’s position. “That’s the privilege of being the hegemon as you get global.”

Schiff countered that such privilege is temporary. “It’s the privilege that we are about to lose. That’s what $3,500 gold tells you. Dollar is on the way out as the reserve currency.”

“I expect Powell to lose”

Brent went on record with a bold call that included something rarely seen in market commentary: timing.

He predicts — as soon as October — a 10 or 20% market downturn… perhaps welcomed by the Trump admin so they can blame the Fed and lower rates.

“To get the cover to do that, they need some pain. I don’t think they can do that right now with things the way they already are.”

“Some kind of a crisis that they blame on the Fed, and then they go back to even easier monetary policy than maybe they had last time. And that is what then gives the fuel to go much higher.”

With markets at record highs and inflation still sticky, “it’s really hard to do it now.”

Brent’s prediction: “I think Powell is pushing back a little bit. But this is the thing—I expect Powell to lose. I think Trump and Bessent are going to get control.”

Zelensky after talks with Slovak PM Fico: Ukraine will keep responding to Russian strikes on energy facilities — “no one will sit in darkness.” He welcomed Slovakia’s support for EU accession and said Kyiv is ready to ensure Slovak energy stability without Russian resources. He added Ukraine could supply oil and gas to Slovakia, “as long as it’s not Russian.” The next meeting with Fico may take place on October 20.

My cousin passed away last week. We weren't really close but I inherited her Biewer Yorkie, Bailey.

I drove 9-hours to Northern Ca to get her then 3 more hours to Oregon to visit my uncle, all in a day. Stayed at my uncle's for a few days then drove all the way back to SoCal. Then died...JK.

So back to being a 4 Yorkie household. 😱

Okay so I need two sets of endpoints.
One set is RPCs-- eg javascript Fetch is used and JSON is returned.
One set is HTML forms-- a <form> is used and <submit> is hit, and a new page loads.

At the moment these are all /actions/endpointname.

What would be the sensible way to do this?

/actions and /forms ?

Identical endpoints, but rpcs take an &rpc=1 term? Or forms take a &html=1 term? Actually that might be better because I could combine functions in the router.

I got too many responses to this to respond to each one individually so I just wanna say *all* the replies I got to this were really good and helpful, thank you

The "pure REST" way would be a single eg. </actions/{name}> endpoint that varies on Accept header content, but I think most people just do separate endpoints or query params.

In practice, it's all mostly the same.

The image features a vibrant garden scene with a variety of plants. In the foreground, there are lush green plants with a curly texture, resembling parsley, and striking red amaranth stalks with a fuzzy appearance. The amaranth has reddish-purple leaves, adding a rich contrast to the greenery. In the background, there are additional green plants and some purple flowers, contributing to the overall lushness of the scene. The plants are densely packed, creating a rich tapestry of colors and textures. The image captures the diversity and beauty of a well-maintained garden.

The image features a close-up view of a flowering plant with vibrant yellow blooms. The flowers have a trumpet-like shape with six petals, and the petals are smooth and slightly translucent, showcasing a rich yellow color. The plant has long, narrow leaves with a variegated pattern of green and cream, adding contrast to the bright flowers. In the background, there are blurred green leaves and stems, suggesting a natural, garden-like setting. The focus is on the flowers, with some buds visible, indicating that the plant is in full bloom. The overall composition highlights the beauty and detail of the flowers against a soft, natural backdrop.

The image features three artichoke flowers in a garden setting. The artichokes are the main focus, with their distinctive spiky, layered petals that are a mix of green and deep purple hues. The largest artichoke is in the foreground, fully open, revealing its intricate, layered structure. The other two artichokes are partially open, with one on the left and another in the background, both displaying similar coloration and structure. The background is a lush garden with various green plants, some with yellow flowers, and a tree trunk visible on the left. The ground is covered with mulch and small plants, adding to the natural, garden-like atmosphere.

The image features a vibrant display of orange flowers with dark centers, likely Black-eyed Susans, in the foreground. These flowers have long, slender petals radiating from a central dark disc, creating a striking contrast. The flowers are densely packed, with some leaning slightly, suggesting a gentle breeze. In the background, a dark, sloped roof of a building is visible, partially obscured by the flowers. To the left, there are hints of purple flowers, adding variety to the scene. The sky is overcast, with gray clouds dominating the upper portion of the image, providing a muted backdrop to the colorful flowers. The overall composition highlights the natural beauty of the flowers against the subdued tones of the sky and building.
