I saw hill, field, and tree and had to photograph it.

Just outside the frame on the left there’s a bush I didn’t want to include, so the tree had to sit far to the left unless I zoomed in more. Right behind the hill the forest begins, so I positioned myself low enough to keep the treetops out, but not too low, or the tree itself would have been cut off. Since the hill slopes, I wandered through the field for minutes, searching for the right spot.

At first, the photo was in color: green field, blue sky, small white clouds, and the dark tree. Pleasant enough, and it reminded me a little of the XP desktop background. Ten days later I tried it in black and white, darkening top and bottom to draw the eye to the horizon with the tree. Something you can hardly pull off convincingly in color. On the right I opened the crop, which pushed the tree further left, away from the rule of thirds. That rule doesn’t matter much to me anyway, though I sometimes glance at it. Mostly, I just go by instinct. After all, I’m not an AI.

@sans_serif_girl
in reply to Jones

Jones reshared this.

@sans_serif_girl
in reply to Jones

@sans_serif_girl
in reply to Jones

@sans_serif_girl

#b12 #vegan #vegetarian

in reply to Jones

in reply to ragazza senza grazie

@sans_serif_girl
io ho letto in "il dilemma dell'onnivoro" di pollan che negli usa queste certificazioni valgono molto poco, qui quanto meglio?
in reply to Jones

in reply to Jones

in reply to Jones

@sans_serif_girl
in reply to Jones

in reply to Jones

After manually resetting passwords from 20+ services due to an employee leaving, the most infuriating things I can think of are: some services don't have a "change password" button, only "Forgot your password?" -- no, I didn't forget, I want to change it on purpose.
And some services also use stupid restrictions on the MAXIMUM length of a password, like 20 characters. Like, why?

"The truth is actually very straightforward. Ordinary even. And that's even more unsettling.

"It's far more sinister than a hot mic," says Egelman.

There's no credible evidence that your phone runs a secret, always-on microphone to target ads, and there are clear technical and policy reasons why.

Independent researchers have gone looking for covert "listening" and found none, including a definitive 2018 Northeastern University study that has yet to be superseded. What they did catch in a handful of cases were screen recordings or image and video uploads to third parties. Creepy, sure, but not a hot mic.

Laws matter, too. The federal Wiretap Act bans intercepting conversations without consent, and many states (like California) require all parties to consent, stacking civil and even criminal liability on covert, continuous capture. An "always-listening for ads" feature would constantly record non-consenting bystanders and invite massive legal exposure. I know that's not completely reassuring, but that's why it's implausible in practice.

When I run the bar moment by ad-tech veteran Ari Paparo, he doesn't flinch. Paparo helped build the pipes — he founded the Beeswax DSP (acquired by Comcast's FreeWheel) and led product management at AppNexus/DoubleClick — so he's seen exactly how ad targeting really works.

"I'm very confident this is not happening. The phone is not actually listening to you," he says. "I would say that 100% of my colleagues in the advertising world agree with me."

I know that's a tough pill to swallow, but he offers the real and almost boring explanation for why it feels uncanny: People are predictable. "The ads are attempting to guess what you're interested in," he says. "It's all statistics."

Simple version, for the record: Ads follow your behavior. No listening required."

So apparently Google Maps started to translate bus stops? For what reason exactly?!

Only result is that it is now impossible to know where to get off the bus if you do not speak both languages.

(the stop is obviously called Brückenstraße everywhere but in Google Maps)

I oppose the US backed Israeli genocide of the Palestinian people.

I condemn the people of Israel who support and perpetrate the murder and slaughter of their neighbours in Palestine.

I am prioritizing stopping an active genocide above all other issues.

This is the most straightforward moral issue of the 21st century. If you oppose this genocide, you are right, and anyone who disagrees with you is wrong.
It really is that simple.

in reply to Peter Cavanagh

It may seem like a small quibble compared to the human lives at stake here.
And yet, I think using generative AI to make the people you support look "better" means your'e basically setting the precedence for using it to make the people you oppose look worse.

...and before you know it, it's made-up evidence all the way down, and filtering actual facts from made-up embellishments becomes impossible. That's an enormously dangerous road to travel.

Where would one even get a cheap old phone these days? I just need something that runs Pandora and Spotify I can plug into speakers and replace my Alexa.
in reply to Jess👾

bigger project, but potentially better is a rPi or similar sbc that you can run Linux and install mopidy on for a music server that can stream from various backends (Pandora works well for me for a year now as do Bandcamp and others while Spotify is a pain to keep working).
in reply to ahoyboyhoy

Yeah but an rpi starts at like $50 these days, plus would need a screen of some form. An old used Android can probably be found for $20 and be all-in-one.

#WritersCoffeeClub 5 September. How much should a writer read?

I generally recommend reading as much as you are able - on any conceivable subject, and certainly outside of your genre. Inspiration can be gained from _anywhere_, and the more you read - the more you know - the more will you be able to develop your own style and your own unique ideas and plots.

One of my major regrets in life is that I do no longer have as much time to read as I did in my youth, but I nevertheless try to keep at it.

Quindi indosso solo magliette basic.
