a year ago i asked some friends 'do you know any product jobs in climate tech that aren't about greenwashing, or trading carbon credits' and it was 'uh not really'

anyway, today i am very glad i ended up where i did because if i had to live through *all of this* while *hating my job* (or having none, which would have meant i couldn't stay), it would have been much, much harder.

if you've recently lost your job, i'm sorry things suck, i've been there, don't be afraid to reach out for help, sympathy, connections.

there is nothing wrong with *you*. i had to remind myself through the constant rejections and ghosting and bad fits: i'm like a very unique restaurant serving a very specific cuisine that i like. some times in my career i can adjust it to cater to a broader audience. sometimes you have to do that. but not everybody will like what you're cooking.

the best career advice i got was, somehow, from my immigration attorney.

he was like, 'there are tens of thousands of product managers in this city. tell me in a few words why what you do matters.'

anyway, that advice helped me get a job i like (i am a product manager with private and public sector experience, who builds great software for critical services in mission-driven orgs); and get my immigration status sorted (i am one of the few people who do this type of work who also have global experience on how to think about AI and its impact on people and society).

unfortunately, this hellscape demands that we all clamor to put a stake in the ground to show why we are special. tech especially has changed and isn't 'you can have a job if you can touch a computer' anymore.

like with many things about the hellscape, asking for help, reaching out to people, making connections if possible, are things that help. i understand it can be challenging for some people.

I keep hearing it said
that at this point
we are “post-Covid”
but whenever I scroll
through social media
I keep seeing people

AI Psychosis sounds like a sci-fi problem, but it is real, and present tense.

This long read in The Verge does a remarkable job of describing how Wikipedia's editing community works, the project's strengths and weaknesses, and the threats it faces.

here's my favorite line: "By 2005, the pages where editors stipulated policy and debated articles were found to be growing faster than the articles themselves. Today, this administrative backend is at least five times the size of the encyclopedia it supports."

I've always argued that the tools we build at the WMF sometimes are too focused on "encyclopedic content" and neglect the fact that the MediaWiki platform is used 5x more often for the meta-work of administering the project. Collaborative tools are important for organizing the work, even if they are not used directly to write the encyclopedic content.

Gravity Storm – First Mission just landed on Steam today—a 2D run-’n-gun platformer with a gravity-flipping twist.

Think Mega Man with VVVVVV’s inversion gimmick. That’s the DNA here. You run, jump, shoot, and dash like the Blue Bomber, but you also slam gravity on demand—dropping to the ceiling or crashing back down—turning every corridor into a puzzle of timing and positioning.

Story is wafer-thin: you’re Project Gravity Storm, a machine built to manipulate gravity. But nobody comes here for lore.

The real star is the level design—tight, clever, grin-inducing. Five stages, two bosses, and a grab-bag of modes: Story, Time Attack, Score Attack, Custom, and even a Boss Rush. There’s also a built-in art gallery featuring community illustrations.

Visually, it doesn’t chase the NES look. Instead it feels like early 90s DOS shareware—closer to Alien Carnage or Bio Menace, though a bit smoother.

Audio is pure modern chiptune. Not era-perfect, but the drive is there. The sound effects, though—they do have that crunchy DOS vibe, like something you’d have heard through a Sound Blaster 16.

Controls: yes, you can do keyboard, but it gets busy with all the gravity flips, dashes, and supers. The dev openly recommends a gamepad, and both Xbox and PlayStation pads work out of the box. Controls are fully remappable, vibration and screen-shake can be toggled, and there’s an in-game tutorial so you don’t fumble through.

Tech side: Windows-only natively, built in GameMaker. I got it running on Linux just fine via Proton. The footprint is tiny—200 MB install, Intel HD 4000 minimum. Basically anything from the last decade can run it.

This is Jampley Games’ first release. And while reviews haven’t rolled in yet, I’m impressed. Not just with the concept, but with the polish. It even ships with twelve Steam achievements, and the dev has already outlined a roadmap: leaderboards, an enemy bestiary, an epilogue stage, and the soundtrack release.

Price is C$8.99 (US$6.99). And with a free demo available, you don’t even need to take my word for it. But if you want my verdict? This is marvelous. A compact, arcade-forward platformer that delivers where it counts. Highly recommended.
