Agreed. Also, in a smaller place, social networks tend to be naturally more diverse. For example, more city people have family or friends in the countryside, and vice-versa. Our small population makes it harder to balkanize into self-similar filter bubbles, where people are only aware of other people like themselves.

A ridiculous 5-book haul at the library #today. I just meant to return some books and not take any out because I already have plenty going on here at home, but I couldn’t help myself. At least four were on my TBR, but the Carl Hiaasen is new, and I haven’t had time to make it there yet. One is the second book in the series (No Mercy), and one is the start of a series (A Bad Day for Sunshine). Ascension looks really cool, and Rosarita looks like an amazing short novelette.

in reply to Dan Gillmor • • •I thought this was ~ "up to $550b in loan guarantees for Japanese companies that want to invest in US" but had the natural limitation that it required actual companies that thought such an investment made sense. That is, it might make them more willing to take risks, but it would not be much of a freebie to do something that doesn't make economic sense.
In other words, no where near as impressive as the one number makes it sound.
