My current phone is a Pixel. I chose it specifically because I could put GrapheneOS on it and avoid Google's spyware almost entirely (and I like cameras). Turns out, given my circumstances, I could not avoid installing the Play Store and a number of apps from it. A lot of platforms now offer standalone SDKs, but not all. I still cannot do any mobile wallet stuff, not even a preloaded public transit card, all because I'm not using one of Google's approved Android forks. I don't have swipe typing because it requires a non-open library (which F-Droid is at least good enough to indicate). All this contrived friction because I'm unwilling to let my phone spy on me all the time.

Last week, I decided to quit Spotify. Between researching options, determining family-plan knock-on effects, shuffling billing around, signing up for a new music streaming service (Qobuz, btw; Tidal is apparently owned by Block/Square/Jack Dorsey and Jay-Z? I just ), and transferring playlists and favourites, it took half a day. Obviously Spotify (or any platform) wants to keep users. But just like employee retention, making it difficult and painful to leave won't actually *create* retention; it just demoralises people.

My dad, who is pushing 80, is losing his complementary MS Office subscription. The company providing it included a list of alternatives in their announcement of the change. Among them, purchasing an individual subscription from Microsoft; and LibreOffice. I have experience with both, so I recommended the latter. My brother made a counterargument that dad doesn't need to be (read: isn't up to) learning a brand new software suite at *fucking 80 years old* especially as a retiree. I concede that he's roght. Dad used to be techy, back when tech was dial-up internet modems and zip drives. He's not capable of keeping pace with modern technology, which I'm certain is an intentional design decision by tech companies. The purpose of a system is what it does, after all.

I've read about how speculators peddling "AI" tools are running huge financial deficits (while destroying the environment) in the hopes of making people so dependent on their products that they can't quit when subscription prices start increasing. Pseudorandom plagiarism vending machines are the new cigarettes: "Just try it once brah, you can always quit". And when employers realise that replacing their designers and programmers and analysts with slop generators was no more than a cheap way to generate vast amounts of beautiful slop very quickly, it will be too late to reverse course. I remember seeing a post: "What is the trillion-dollar question AI is trying to solve? Wages. They're trying to solve wages." What happens when they're paying repeaters instead of creators? They get stagnation rather than progress.

It shouldn't be this difficult to *exist*. It shouldn't be this difficult to retain a modicum of information privacy. It shouldn't be this difficult to switch to a better product. It shouldn't be this difficult to remain sufficiently tech literate to do what is required of me to exist in society for the entirety of my life.

When we're told that even our indentured servitude to corporate landlords is too expensive and is being replaced by robots, what are we expected to do? (That question's rhetorical; I know the answer is open revolt.)

think it was only last year when Disney corp attempted to force the family of a man who died due to negligence on one of their cruise ships, into forced arbitration rather than face criminal proceedings- because they had accepted the T&Cs in their Disney+ subscription. The T&Cs included agreeing to forced arbitration.

@BobLefridge I saw @pluralistic talking about binding arbitration at Unity Books in Wellington a few months ago. I had no idea about it until then. It is evil and should be illegal- not a tool for our (any) government to use to remove basic human rights.

crosshairs on its back: leaked Heritage Foundation slides detail a
plan to force Wikipedia to unmask editors who contribute
criticism of Israel to the project.

The Media Research Center has called for the Big Tech
