putin, Xi and the mechanics of everlasting life

While the world's autocrats fantasize about replacing body parts like car tires, the science just isn't there.

A occhio direi nessun senso.

If you ever feel like you aren't good enough, please remember that a $44bn social media site had a breaking defect in their registration flow with no means of recovery, owing to confusing relative and absolute paths.

Oh, this was about ten minutes ago, by the way.

in reply to Matthias

@Barbara Elers

Gut so!

For 200 years, #ice was thought to be slippery because a thin liquid #water layer forms under pressure and friction under the weight of the footstep.

But this idea of frictional melting appears to have defied direct experimental verification.

Now it also has been shown to be wrong.

A new paper presents molecular simulations of ice interfaces that reveal that ice surfaces liquefy without melting thermodynamically but predominantly by cold, displacement-driven amorphization.

Despite effective self-lubrication, very small ice friction is found to require water to slip past a hydrophobic counterface—or an excess amount of water, produced by, e.g., extreme sliding velocities.

Scientists watch Parkinson’s protein drill holes in brain cells for the first time

Scientists have uncovered a surprising way Parkinson’s disease may start: tiny toxic proteins that punch holes in brain cells like revolving doors. Instead of causing instant collapse, these flickering pores slowly weaken the cells, which could explain the gradual onset of symptoms.

So I relaunched my blog again. This time I’m hosting it myself. Never again with third-party platforms.

My bad experiences with Medium and @write_as led me here, to my own Jekyll solution.

My very first article published with this system talks about the journey and why this decision matters.

(Also, I have finally resolved to calling it a blog.)

Another reason why a static site generator is good for longevity: it won't stop working, or be pulled. Sure, if people stop developing it, maybe there's a particularly annoying bug that won't get fixed, *but it will keep working just the same way as earlier*. It's possible to download and keep a copy of the software, and to run that locally. And a bug might mean you can't do something you'd like to do, but (hopefully not jinxing it, now) won't ever introduce any kind of vulnerability.
in reply to mkj

@mkj agreed! And porting to a new static site generator would be far less painful that to/from a third-party platform. It basically just becomes config at that point.

in reply to mkj

When I migrated my own site to be a static site, I did initially look at a handful of alternatives. Hugo was one. I passed rather hard on that because, sure, it might be possible to stop it from doing that, but it *really really really wanted* to pull stuff from the Internet into the web site during the site build process. Which for me meant that besides offline builds at best being non-standard, I can't be sure builds are idempotent. Which were pretty strong requirements for me.

@mkj that’s weird about Hugo. I looked at it, but passed form some reason that I can’t recall. Maybe because I don’t know anything about Go.

I have been using Middleman for as long as I can remember. Just for regular sites. But I don’t like their blog setup. And there was a bug with something I wanted to do. So that’s how I landed with Jekyll. Which is working great so far.

@mkj

for anyone like me who is very very (very) late to the Linux #LXC party, this explains why #LXD has been replaced with #Incus.

tl;dr: #Canonical ruined things with a embrace-extend-extinguish play of relicensing and requiring contributors to sign a CLA to contribute to LXD.
