Since a lot of people are trying out #Linux for the first time these days, just wanted to throw down a #PSA that not even many Linux users realize...
The #Swap #partition is NOT just Virtual #Memory, though it can be used for that. It's meant to be a space for the OS to cache all sorts of things, including storing the #RAM contents in Hibernate mode, and can significantly improve performance.
Personally, I'd stick it at the end of your #SSD, where you can always shrink it later for more Program Storage, and give yourself enough to hibernate.

in reply to nixCraft 🐧 • • •Me thinks switching from Windows (11, or 10 for that matter) to Linux is more like switching from a 2020ies "car" that makes you accept a terms of service when starting up, constantly blinks and bleeps at you for no apparent reason, has all the relevant functionality hidden behind a touch-screen and requires constant software updates, to the slightly older car that goes where you ask it to without begging and pleading and where the "user interface" is mechanical and so, usable and accessible with gloves on, and without taking your eyes off the road.
Edit: Oh, forgot to mention ads! Or lack of thereof. And subscriptions to features that came with the package, but are disabled without extra fees. And whatnot.

in reply to nixCraft 🐧 • • •Actually I think of it the other way around, windows (all numbers etc) is the brand new car with every bell and whistle 70% installed, but no user maintenance.
Linux is one of those old car designs, that just works forever, and can be fixed by anyone with a Haynes manual.

in reply to nixCraft 🐧 • • •I think that the linux community needs to come to terms about the state of Linux for new users. I hate the direction of Windows, but ultimately if I want to run something Windows, if I open the executable it will probably run. On linux you have to be aware of dependencies and your specific environment for even basic stuff. It's kind of inevitable you'll end up pasting commands you found online into the terminal trying to get stuff to work, and that is not fun.
This is coming from someone who really, really wants to like Linux, but every time I switch for a month or two, it's a relief going back to Windows at the end. I think saying Linux is easier is setting an unrealistic expectation for people who don't use Linux
