"La véritable tragédie n'est pas que Trump abuse de son pouvoir. Il est dans la nature des hégémons d'intimider ceux qui les dérangent. La véritable tragédie, ou peut-être la farce, réside dans la réaction de l'Europe. Nos gouvernements ont-ils réagi par une condamnation unanime et tonitruante ? Ont-ils pris des mesures de rétorsion et immédiatement créé des canaux financiers et numériques européens pour protéger leur propre système judiciaire et leurs citoyens contre les intimidations extraterritoriales ? Hélas, la réponse a été un spectacle tragicomique d'acquiescement total et complet.

Les banques européennes, intimidées par le regard sévère d'un fonctionnaire du Trésor américain à Washington, se sont empressées de fermer les comptes de Guillou. Les entreprises européennes, dont les services de conformité agissent comme des extensions des autorités américaines, refusent de lui fournir des services. Pendant ce temps, les institutions européennes – la Commission et le Conseil – détournent le regard, se tordent les mains et marmonnent des platitudes sur la « complexité » des relations transatlantiques. Non seulement elles ne protègent pas Guillou, mais elles appliquent activement les sanctions américaines contre leur propre citoyen.
Au cours d'une semaine où les dirigeants européens ont vivement protesté contre la manière dont les États-Unis les avaient écartés de la conclusion d'un accord de paix pour l'Ukraine, leur silence sur le traitement réservé à Guillou a complètement normalisé l'érosion de leur autorité. Du point de vue de Trump, ils ont troqué le projet ambitieux et complexe de souveraineté contre le déclin confortable d'un protectorat américain. Comment le président français Emmanuel Macron aurait-il pu s'attendre à ce que Trump interprète sa décision de traiter l'assassinat économique d'un juge français sur le sol français comme un simple incident technique malheureux ou une petite erreur bureaucratique ? Lui et le chancelier allemand Friedrich Merz croyaient-ils vraiment que sacrifier leurs citoyens à Trump leur permettrait d'obtenir une place à la table des négociations sur des questions telles que l'Ukraine et la Palestine, qui revêtent une importance existentielle pour l'Europe ?

Non, le cauchemar kafkaïen de Guillou ne devrait pas nous surprendre. Ce qui devrait nous choquer, c'est le silence qui l'entoure. Nous devrions être indignés non seulement par les actions des États-Unis, mais aussi par l'inaction de l'Europe. Le cas de Guillou est une métaphore frappante de l'Europe elle-même : une union d'États-nations qui a contribué à la création d'un tribunal international pour défendre ses valeurs, qui a permis à une puissance étrangère de punir son propre juge pour avoir agi ainsi, puis qui a contribué à faire appliquer cette punition. C'est une union qui a perdu son chemin, son âme et sa colonne vertébrale, transformant les Européens en figurants consentants dans le théâtre de notre propre déclin.

Dans quelques années, lorsque presque tout le monde affirmera avoir condamné les crimes de guerre commis par Israël à Gaza, le monde se souviendra avec émotion du juge Guillou. Mais le monde se souviendra également des principaux dirigeants politiques européens, non seulement pour leur lâcheté, mais aussi pour leur indifférence face à une réalité simple : ceux qui ne défendent pas leurs propres valeurs perdent toute pertinence."

Sorry, here comes the rant; 1 mass shooting a decade vs over 300 this year alone. It's not just a firearm availability issue, though that is part of it. The U.S. has a societal level culture problem. We glorify firearm violence. Our heroes are almost all those who got onto their pedestals through violence. Our culture is broken. I not only mourn the dead. I mourn what we, as a people, could have been.
