Al in 2024 publiceerde Francesca Albanese het onderzoeksrapport Anatomie van een genocide. Daarin zette de Speciaal Rapporteur in de Palestijnse Gebieden van de Verenigde Naties uiteen dat Israël eropuit is Gaza te verwoesten. Hoewel er de afgelopen paar jaar veel gesteggeld is over of de militaire acties van Israël tegen de Palestijnen wel genocide genoemd mochten worden, weten Albanese en collega’s al jarenlang dat Israël systematisch werkt aan het verdrijven en vernietigen van het Palestijnse volk.
Mensenrechten zijn ‘onze schilden, en zo nodig onze zwaarden’, schrijft de Italiaanse VN-rapporteur in Wanneer de wereld slaapt. Maar waarom is het zo dat de mensenrechten van de ene groep zoveel belangrijker zijn dan van een andere? Ze voltooide het boek begin dit jaar, en de situatie in Gaza nu is anders dan die van toen. Maar het is een illusie om te denken dat met een staakt-het-vuren het brute geweld tegen de Palestijnen voorbij is.
