Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery (2025).

Wake Up Dead Man is a Knives Out Mystery through and through. Not as good as the first one, but better than the second. Quite a bit darker and a bit more serious than the previous two films, Wake Up Dead Man’s tone is not not funny, but decidedly less funny. Though, in those occasional moments of levity, they hit hard and garnered a serious laugh.

Much like the previous films, the script by director Rian Johnson is a well-written non-linearly told mystery that has many twists and turns. And like his other Knives Out mysteries, it wraps up logically and cleanly.

Daniel Craig has firmly moved on from James Bond and established himself firmly in the radically different character of Benoit Blanc. While I enjoyed his time as James Bond, it is Benoit Blanc that I will remember him for. Josh Brolin is awesome as Monsignor Wicks an acerbic church leader who uses fear and anger to control his flock. Josh O’Connor shines as a pure at heart Father Jud who gets intwined in a locked room murder. He is perfectly cast and this movie would not work without him. Jeffrey Wright is excellent in his role as the quietly foul mouth Bishop Langstrom. While Wright doesn’t have much screen time, he makes a huge impact.

Rian Johnson continues to impress as a writer and director. Steve Yedlin Captures some beautiful images for the film. There are frames in this movie that have such subtle things in them that I started to look at each scene to see what small things are hidden throughout. I loved how Johnson and Yedlin used the demons on the ceiling — in one scene framing Wicks and the demon perfectly together.

I highly enjoyed Wake Up Dead Man and will watch it again soon to see what I missed in this first watch.

Rated 9 out of 10.
