A group of white South Africans arrived in the U.S. today under President Trump's refugee plan. Trump said that members of the country's Afrikaner minority were victims of "racial discrimination" and claimed that a genocide was taking place targeting white farmers — allegations that have been widely discredited. The United Nations refugee agency, UNHCR, has also not been involved in the resettlement scheme, and Afrikaner author Max du Preez told @BBCNews that the claims were a "total absurdity" based on "nothing." White South Africans make up just 7.3% of the population, but own the vast majority of privately held farmland, according to a 2017 government report. This laundry hamper is made of plastic fabric. Two months along, the handles started to tear away from the sides—the way they were designed to.
So I got some black polyurethane strapping and used a gorilla-style glue to reinforce everything. (That glue is brilliant for this sort of thing, especially synthetic fabric.)
Garbage reduced, $40 unwasted.

Moment of Stillness in the Forest
While sitting in the backyard with Charlie, we listened to a spirited sing-off between a northern cardinal, a brown thrasher, a great crested flycatcher, and a Carolina wren. Their songs filled the air, creating a beautiful chorus, though the only birds I actually spotted were the cardinals. As our outdoor session came to an end, I got up, and we wandered to the edge of the fence, scanning the surrounding trees in hopes of catching a glimpse of the hidden singers. Despite our efforts, they remained tucked away in the foliage. Just as we were looking up, a red-bellied woodpecker (Melanerpes carolinus) suddenly landed in the oak tree above us, offering an unexpected and welcome sight.

@grb090423 It would also not form a chair, table or barn when it dies and decays naturally. And yet it can be "housing" for animals and critters in its ecological space - dead or alive.
I just read an interesting chapter in Kimmerers "Braiding Sweetgrass" yesterday. It deals with those very moral conflicts: Who are we to decide who lives and dies, when we shape ecosystems to benefit our own lives? Who's house did we take from them to make our own?
Keeps me thinking.

My initial point stands for me though, even if we forego morality or natural/artificial, this article was such a punch in the gut. And not because the one chair we see here in this pic. The artists made other stuff too, shaped differently. No one is right or wrong on how they feel about this. It’s more like an opportunity to observe our feelings about other beings in nature
