Damon Belanger, a graphic artist based in the San Francisco Bay Area, created a public art installation called “Fake Shadows” in Redwood City, California, USA. Funded by the Redwood City Public Art Program, this unique and playful street art project was realized in 2016.

Belanger’s “Fake Shadows” are a delightful interplay of reality and illusion. The artist added painted false shadows to common street objects, such as bike racks, benches, mailboxes, and even a manhole cover, turning them into whimsical creatures and objects. For example, a parking meter’s shadow becomes a monkey’s tail, a mailbox casts the shadow of a dragon, and a bike rack’s shadow transforms into a monkey on a tree.

If you’ve had the chance to see Damon Belanger’s “Fake Shadows” in person, why not share your experience or better still, your photos in our Facebook group Your Street Art Utopia?

Why do you send me on these away missions? I'm expensive. I'm the latest model. I cost 200K megacredits. Humans are basically free. They just get born. Push, push, push, and you've got a human. I saw a video.

Shut up Dexter. Just report what you find.

This place is dusty. I'm going to need a wash and polish when I get back.

Do you see any inhabitants?

No, but they're here. They're hiding. They've got all these ramshackle buildings. Looks like they had a war.

It looks like that from up here too. Maybe 50 planet orbits ago. They really messed themselves up.

Dang, they shot a projectile at me! They are going to get my chrome all dinged up. Can I blast them?

Negative. We want to help them.

Some are running away. Give chase?

Negative. That would be hostile. Remain in place. Try playing a song. Pretend you are the ice cream man.

Dah-Dah-Dah, Ding A-ling Dah. It's not working. Uh-oh, they've got a rocket launcher. Can I blast them?

Negative. Move forward slowly.

Ouch! They shot a projectile from behind. I'm going to have to get the detail guy to fix my chrome. I hit him with a neuroslick. He's down.

I told you not to . . .

It wasn't lethal! He's just in a lot of pain, that's all.

We are trying to help them! We've got to make friends!

Yeah, but my chrome! He deserved it, the dirty biological! Besides, they all went back into hiding. They got the message.

Eject the gifts now. The little TVs and the music players.

OK, but they will probably think they are weapons.

Whose fault is that, Dexter?

Gifts ejected. No one is coming out to get them though. Oh, they threw a net over me, the dirty biologicals!

Dexter, remind me to update your diplomacy module.

Ack, this net is tough. My lasers can cut it, but it's slow going. They got the rocket launcher out again. Can I blast them? Their tech is a little better than we thought. I'm a little worried.

OK, Dexter. Save yourself. We'll try again later. Next time we will send a human team.

I told you so. Humans are cheaper!

in reply to tagesschau

Here's another geolocation mystery. Again, it's 1963 and it's from the same roll that has aerial shots of Iran and Kuwait.

@ai6yr any ideas?

I'm not sure, I am having difficulty seeing how you'd get that photo and only have one of the two engines on the wing in the frame. In another thread @intrepidhero suggested a Lockheed PV-2 Harpoon. That has a very similar bump on top of the cowling and the view looks like it might match the view from the window behind the pilot. vmst.io/@intrepidhero/11449559…

Street art by Damon Belanger in Redwood City, California, showing a blue USPS mailbox casting a painted “fake shadow” that resembles a cartoonish monster with a wide open mouth and sharp teeth. The playful illusion turns an everyday object into a humorous and imaginative creature emerging from the pavement.

On your next urban adventure, remember this: street art is not only about murals on walls or graffiti tags. It’s an ever-evolving form of self-expression that can turn even a simple street fixture into a source of surprise and joy. So, keep your eyes open – the next creative twist could be just around the corner!

Public art installation by Damon Belanger in Redwood City, California, featuring creatively painted "fake shadows" beneath a row of circular bike racks. The black painted shadows transform the standard metal poles into whimsical flower stems and blooms, making the structures appear as if they're casting floral shadows on the sidewalk in bright daylight.
