Yesterday I migrated my brothers computer to free software.
He was still running Windows 10 and agreed that "upgrading" to the privacy nightmare of Windows 11 is not an option. We didn't even bother to check hardware compatibility. Being a long-term Linux user myself, I offered my support and advice, and he took it ❤
With all of his family using the PC we wanted an experience that is a) similar in terms of UI metaphors and applications and b) generally beginner-friendly. So we went with Linux Mint and a Cinnamon desktop environment. We carefully repartitioned his hard drives as to keep his data safe, set up a boot loader and installed the OS and all the applications he already knows and loves: Firefox, Thunderbird, VLC, even Steam and some games with Proton.
It all went smoothly, and I am happy that now there's another free software user out there. If you're worried about taking this step yourself, reach out to people who can support you. Here are some suggestions:

French Rabbi Delphine Horvilleur faces threats from within her own community after publishing an article criticizing #Israel's blockade of humanitarian aid to #Gaza.
Horvilleur, who wrote that "without a future for the Palestinian people, there can be no future for the Israeli people," has been met with calls for "din rodef" (religious permission to kill someone deemed dangerous) and a barrage of misogynistic attacks. 90% of messages she's received attack her appearance or claim women shouldn't hold religious authority.
[…] Like many other Jews, I want to say that my love for this country is not based on a messianic promise, a property deed, or a sanctification of the land. It is a dream of survival for a people that no one knew how or wanted to protect, and it is the absolute refusal to annihilate another people to achieve it. It is the conviction, already expressed by its founders, that this State must live up to its ancestral history and, according to the terms of its Declaration of Independence, "extend a hand" to all neighboring countries and their peoples.
Despite the backlash, Horvilleur, who describes herself as "too Zionist for some, not Zionist enough for others," maintains she speaks out of love for Israel, quoting Isaiah: "For Zion's sake I will not be silent."
Her social media accounts are now under police surveillance as she continues to advocate that criticizing Israeli policy isn't betrayal but a moral obligation.
