@Mike Galsworthy 🦣 The question is weirdly phrased by focusing on the vote aspect of Brexit, but I'd guess people still answered about whether it was right or wrong to leave the EU.
If people answered the actual question, it wouldn't say much about their opinion on the leaving aspect itself.
Healthy people are neither needed nor useful for the economy. They don't buy medicine. They do not go to hospitals or doctors. Nothing is added to the country's GDP (gross domestic product).
On the contrary, every new McDonald's restaurant creates at least 30 jobs: 10 cardiologists, 10 dentists, 10 dietary experts and nutritionists, and obviously, people who work at the restaurant itself."
Choose carefully: cyclist or McDonald's? It is worth considering.

While it is obvious that more energy is needed to move a car than to stream an album over the internet, it becomes much less obvious once the whole system is taken into account. Just like roads have costs, so does the internet infrastructure. Storing and streaming data requires data centers, routers, switches and cables that not only need to be constantly powered, but also periodically replaced.

Our world becomes increasingly digitized and yet our resource use is only going up. How would you explain that?

Firstly, because I have recent lifecycle analysis under my eyes. We are talking differences by one or two orders of magnitude, there.
Secondly, the increase of resources consumption at world level is overwhelmingly the effect of development. In the Western world, resource consumption per capita is stable or decreasing in most countries (the US are, as for health, the embarrassing outlier).

I live in Europe and wherever I look I see more *stuff*. There's no way we are using less resource inputs per capita than 20 or even 10 years ago.
A current BMW consumes half as much as a 1990's Ford Sierra.
There has also been bounds in energy efficiency of most home appliances and heating devices.
You'll also notice that there is more stuff, but most of it is so much lighter than it used to be.

Yes, but there were less cars when I was young. The playground next to my parents' house has been converted into a parking lot. 🙁
The car sizes also changed drastically. Our family of five drove on vacation in Fiat 126p. Now my two parents drive alone in Toyota RAV4.
The lighter stuff may still have a bigger environmental impact / material input. Just ask yourself: how many kilograms of raw materials must be mined to produce a single cell phone?

A single cell phone? Last time I checked up, it was about 60 - 90 kg of mining waste for that 140 grams of specialness. And about 14,000 liters of water. Not to worry, we've only made and dumped about 16 billion of them since 2007.

There's more materials in a modern tire than there used to be in an entire car. What that means is that tires are toxic time bombs, with a car’s four tires generating one trillion toxic nano particles of dust for every kilometer driven. But, heh, innovation and efficiency!

No, I'm arguing that deriving a marginal cost for digital goods is not as straightforward as one could wish. Unless we externalise pretty much everything, which would make your original point about "less inputs" moot.

Un’altra guerra, un altro giro di assurdità. Questa volta tocca di nuovo a Donald Trump, il quale — va detto — ha legami stretti con Israele, anche familiari, e forse per questo motivo certe sue mosse si possono in parte “comprendere”, se non giustificare. Senza troppi scrupoli, l'ex presidente ha scelto di infilarsi a piè pari nel nuovo conflitto in Medio Oriente, rivendicando con orgoglio la paternità della decisione, quasi fosse un merito politico da sbandierare.
Certo, i primi colpi li hanno sparati gli israeliani, che hanno scelto tempi, modalità, obiettivi e giustificazioni. Ma il teatrino mediatico ha rapidamente ribaltato la narrazione: l’intervento, dicono, è stata una scelta ponderata e autonoma di Trump. Un po’ come se, assistendo a un incendio appiccato da altri, qualcuno dicesse che la decisione di andare sul posto sia stata dei pompieri.
Eppure, non è tanto l’azione in sé a suscitare il mio sdegno, quanto la motivazione: Trump è in cerca disperata di una guerra, una qualunque, purché abbastanza scenografica da poter essere spacciata — con un po’ di propaganda e qualche premio ad hoc — come una grande operazione di pace. L'obiettivo finale? Il Nobel per la Pace, ovviamente. Un paradosso già visto, ma che nella sua versione è talmente grottesco da sembrare satira. Peccato che sia tutto terribilmente reale.
A dire il vero, Trump non è neppure il centro del mio interesse. Quello che davvero mi inquieta, e che trovo ben più rilevante, è l’atteggiamento che si respira sulla stampa italiana — e, ahimè, anche nei salotti televisivi — dove orde di “politologi”, “filosofi” e sedicenti “intellettuali” sembrano rispuntare come funghi dopo la pioggia. Tutti con la stessa lagna stanca: l’Europa è irrilevante, non conta nulla, è tagliata fuori dal consesso dei grandi decisori globali.
Quello che colpisce non è tanto l’analisi — scadente — quanto l’ossessione provinciale che traspare da queste dichiarazioni. C’è qualcosa di visceralmente paesano in questa ansia da esclusione, in questo continuo piagnisteo su come l’Europa non sia “tra quelli che contano”, come se la vera tragedia fosse non essere stati invitati al ricevimento della Storia. È un riflesso condizionato tipico di chi vive il dibattito geopolitico come un talk show: serve apparire, esserci, mostrarsi al centro, anche solo per dire una banalità sotto i riflettori.
E a quel punto ci si chiede legittimamente quanto possano definirsi “intellettuali” o “politologi” questi personaggi che, con tono grave e pseudo-platonico, sentenziano che l’Europa è irrilevante perché non ha un esercito “che spacca”, perché non alza la voce, perché non mena le mani. Come se la potenza militare fosse l’unico parametro per definire la rilevanza politica e morale di un continente. Eppure, questa idea — che rispunta ad ogni crisi — dice più sulla miseria culturale del dibattito italiano che sulla reale posizione dell’Europa nel mondo.
Mi sono preso il tempo di fare una rapida ricognizione della stampa internazionale — quantomeno quella scritta in inglese, o che risulta facilmente traducibile con un qualsiasi traduttore automatico. E quello che ho notato è tanto semplice quanto sconcertante: da nessun’altra parte, nemmeno in Paesi ben più direttamente coinvolti nella crisi, si avverte lo stesso lamento ossessivo sulla presunta irrilevanza nazionale o continentale. Questo fenomeno sembra, ancora una volta, una specialità tutta italiana.
Prendiamo la Turchia, per esempio. Non solo è geograficamente a un passo dalla zona calda, ma condivide effettivamente un tratto di confine con l’Iran — circa 534 chilometri, per essere precisi. Parliamo di una nazione con un esercito tra i più grandi e meglio addestrati della regione, membro della NATO e storicamente attiva sul piano regionale. Eppure, sfogliando i giornali turchi, non si trova alcuna eco del nostro piagnisteo. Nessuno si strappa le vesti perché Ankara non viene “consultata”, e nessuno accusa la mancanza di un esercito ancora più potente come causa di irrilevanza politica.
Ancora più emblematico è il caso dell’India. La stampa indiana, spesso in lingua inglese e quindi più accessibile, mostra tutt’altro approccio: nessun complesso di esclusione, nessun rosicamento per non essere “della partita”. Anzi, il tono dominante è pragmatico: si osserva il conflitto da lontano, con un certo distacco, e in molti casi si sottolinea come questi siano problemi creati e alimentati dalle potenze imperiali occidentali. Il sottinteso è chiaro: “ci facciamo gli affari nostri”. E, tutto sommato, non si tratta di una posizione sprovveduta.
Il punto davvero inquietante, tuttavia, emerge osservando il discorso pubblico italiano. I nostri “intellettuali” — ammesso che il termine abbia ancora un significato nel contesto attuale — sembrano incapaci di resistere alla tentazione di fondere due argomenti tanto deboli quanto pericolosi:
- Nessuno dei protagonisti del conflitto ascolta l’Europa.
- Questo accade perché non abbiamo un esercito sufficientemente minaccioso.
Ed è proprio dalla fusione di questi due punti che nasce un interrogativo spinoso:
ma quindi, cari opinionisti dalle velleità filosofiche, ci state forse suggerendo che, se solo avessimo un esercito “cazzuto”, dovremmo essere là, a sganciare bombe sull’Iran? A minacciare raid punitivi, a dettare legge con i carri armati? O cosa, di preciso?
Perché se è questa la vostra idea di “rilevanza internazionale”, allora il problema non è l’assenza di una forza armata europea: il problema siete voi, e la vostra idea retrograda e pericolosa di politica estera, che scambia la diplomazia per debolezza e la guerra per autorevolezza.
Siamo ancora ai famosi 4000 morti necessari per sedersi al tavolo della pace?
Sarò brutale, come è giusto essere in tempi di ipocrisie generalizzate: l’Unione Europea dovrebbe emendare il proprio trattato fondativo con un nuovo principio cardine, un Articolo Zero. Il suo testo sarebbe semplice, inequivocabile, finalmente onesto:
“L’Europa si fa i cazzi suoi.”
E sia chiaro: non mi sto riferendo alla solita neutralità di maniera, quella da Svizzera col doppiopetto e il francobollo commemorativo. No. Parlo di neutralità attiva, indifferenza strategica, e sì, anche di un sano e consapevole menefreghismo istituzionalizzato. Una dottrina chiara, limpida e soprattutto funzionale in un mondo in cui la smania di “contare qualcosa” produce solo disastri.
Facciamo un passo indietro e guardiamo il quadro con lucidità: se togliamo dal conto USA, Unione Europea, Iran e Israele, rimangono 165 Paesi sul pianeta. Sapete quanti di questi si stanno strappando le vesti per non essere parte attiva della solita rissa geopolitica? Zero. La stragrande maggioranza del mondo, quella che non compare nei titoli di testa, si fa i cazzi suoi. E vive benissimo così.
Prendiamo ad esempio il Brasile: nazione immensa, economia significativa, forza armata addestrata a combattere nella giungla — perfetta, per dire, per dare una mano ai marines nel Vietnam. L’hanno fatto? No. Si sono mai domandati se fossero “irrilevanti” perché non bombardavano nessuno? Neanche per sogno. Perché — e qui sta il punto — non gliene fregava assolutamente nulla di “contare qualcosa a tutti i costi”.
E potremmo continuare. Vedete forse la Cina farsi coinvolgere nei raid aerei? L’India che minaccia rappresaglie? Il Giappone che rispolvera il bushido e manda portaerei nel Golfo? No. Si fanno, saggiamente, i cazzi loro.
E noi? In Italia — e più in generale in Europa — si continua invece con il piagnisteo, orchestrato da una classe di intellettuali da salotto, che con aria grave e profonda ci spiegano che “non contiamo nulla”, che “non abbiamo voce in capitolo”, e che — ovviamente — la colpa è la mancanza di un esercito “che spacca”. E non siamo neanche stati invitati alla festa di Natale dal sindaco.
Ecco allora la verità scomoda che nessuno vuole dire: grazie al cielo, l’Europa è fuori dal gioco. E non perché sia debole, ma perché ha scelto — per una volta — di non partecipare al teatrino bellico globale. E questo, lungi dall’essere un problema, potrebbe finalmente rappresentare l’indizio di una politica estera autonoma, consapevole, adulta.
Altro che crisi d’identità: se l’Europa scegliesse davvero di farsi i cazzi suoi, forse sarebbe la prima scelta strategica degna di nota degli ultimi trent’anni.
Il trucco delle guerre nazionali “globalizzate”
So benissimo chi non gradirà questa proposta. E non mi riferisco solo ai soliti burocrati in doppiopetto. Parlo di quelle realtà — Israele e Ucraina in primis — che condividono una strategia sottile ma costante: trasformare una guerra nazionale in un dramma collettivo globale, trascinando il resto del mondo dentro un conflitto che, in origine, riguarda solo loro.
Entrambe sanno perfettamente di non avere, da sole, né la forza economica né la capacità militare per tenere testa ai loro avversari — che siano Russia o Iran. Ed entrambe giocano quindi la stessa carta: cercano disperatamente di coinvolgere attori terzi, meglio se più armati, più ricchi, e più suggestionabili, nel nome di una solidarietà geopolitica a senso unico.
Con Trump, l’operazione è riuscita alla perfezione. Il classico bulletto da campus: pieno di sé, con il ciuffo sempre in ordine, e una voglia compulsiva di mettersi in mostra. Come poteva resistere alla tentazione di fare il protagonista nella nuova guerra “giusta”? Non poteva. E infatti non ha resistito.
Ma il vero nodo è un altro. Quando leggo certi articoli, editoriali e commenti che accusano l’Europa di non “contare” perché non ha un esercito “che bombarda”, noto sempre lo stesso schema. Gli autori — commentatori, giornalisti, azionisti dei media — condividono quasi sempre un legame sentimentale, familiare o identitario con Israele. E guarda caso, sono proprio loro a suggerire che l’unico modo per essere “rilevanti” sia fare la guerra per conto altrui.
E certo: piacerebbe eccome a questi commentatori che l’Unione Europea avesse un esercito forte. Forte non per difendere l’Europa, ma per bombardare l’Iran su richiesta di Tel Aviv.
Con Trump ci siete riusciti. Complimenti. Ma con l’Europa, no.
È giunto il momento di dimostrare, in modo inequivocabile, che l’Unione Europea non è una colonia militare di Netanyahu. E lo si dimostra non con le chiacchiere, ma con i fatti: ignorando con metodo, disciplina e perfida indifferenza sia le pressioni dei governi interessati, sia le campagne mediatiche orchestrate da chi si commuove solo quando è Israele a bombardare o ad essere bombardata.
La neutralità, in questo caso, non è vigliaccheria. È autonomia strategica. E, per una volta, potrebbe perfino essere un atto di coraggio.
Perché alla fine, diciamolo senza giri di parole: se c’è una cosa che l’Europa non deve mai diventare — armata o disarmata, forte o irrilevante — è una brutta copia degli Stati Uniti nella versione Trump.
Un’Unione Europea che si agita compulsivamente per “contare qualcosa”, che insegue guerre altrui per sentirsi importante, che si presta a fare da proxy bellico per interessi esterni, non sarebbe più una potenza civile, ma un'imitazione patetica del peggior imperialismo americano, in salsa reality show.
E se questa è la strada per “contare nel mondo”, beh, allora sì: preferisco mille volte un'Europa che si fa i cazzi suoi.
