Massive Attack prove 98% emission reduction possible
In August last year Massive Attack staged a ‘proof of concept’ one-day festival in Bristol to show that low carbon festivals are doable. I was lucky enough to attend the event and I wrote an extensive report on it at the time.
The Tyndall Centre for Climate Research has now released the findings from analysing the festival’s emissions, showing that it produced an incredible 98% decrease in power emissions from comparable shows.
Vegan food, incentives to travel by rail and a fleet of electric vehicles reduced catering and haulage emissions by 89% and 70% respectively.
The report also showed that 5% of attendees opted to fly to the festival and in doing so they generated 64% of the event’s overall greenhouse gases.

I decided to recreate a well known graph showing the amount of clean electricity generated between Portugal, Denmark and the United Arab Emirates. The UAE started Barakah-4 last September, which now brought online their whole nuclear fleet, which they decided to build in 2009. The eventual generated capacity is expected to be around 42,000 GWh annually, which they'll probably achieve this year (we'll know for sure when the numbers get presented next year).
The UAE is very interested in building another set of four units, most likely of the same Korean design and same Korean builder that built the first four.
These units will last a century and will generate a massive chunk of clean energy. Of course we also still need to build loads of solar and wind to get to zero emissions faster, but nuclear 𝗺𝘂𝘀𝘁 be part of that solution.

Die Deutsche Umwelthilfe (DUH) reichte vorletzte Woche eine Klage gegen das Land Baden-Württemberg ein, weil die grün-schwarze Landesregierung die Klimaziele verfehlt. Die ohnehin schwache und selbst gesteckte Zwischenetappe 2030 wird nicht erreicht und der grüne Ministerpräsident aus eigenen Reihen, der Grünen Jugend, kritisiert. Das gerichtlichen Vorgehen zielt darauf ab, dass noch vor der Landtagswahl nächsten Jahres durch Sofortmaßnahmen nachgebessert wird. Der Umweltverband beruft sich auf das Klimaschutzgesetz, das zusätzliche Maßnahmen vorsieht, sollte eine "drohende erhebliche Zielabweichung" festgestellt werden. Vorgeschlagen hat die DUH ein landesweites Tempolimit auf Autobahnen, Tempo 80 außerorts oder die energetische Sanierung von Schulen und Kitas. Winfried Kretschmann selbst, mit Unterstützung der CDU und Junger Union, bewertet die Klage für überzogen und begründete dies durch die AfD-ähnliche Position, Baden-Württemberg mache nur einen geringen Teil der globalen Emissionen aus und es müsse Wohlstand gesichert werden.
Die Klimaliste BW befürwortet die Klage der Deutschen Umwelthilfe. Wir sind der Meinung als wirtschaftsstarkes Bundesland endlich Verantwortung übernehmen und vorbildlich konsequenten und sozial gerechten Klimaschutz vorranbringen zu müssen. Nur so schaffen wir zukunftsfähige Arbeitsplätze, eine gemeinwohlorientierte Gesellschaft und lebenswerte Zukunft für nachfolgende Generationen.
Diese Vision machen wir durch unseren Antritt zur Landtagswahl im März 2026 erneut wählbar.
