I have always appreciated and agreed with @bert_hubert a lot on policy and "Cloud" and all this.
This piece from him is totally on point regarding needs, reality of opensource and ways we could go forward.
I, being a pessimist, see no way this vision would happen, I do not think we have the policymakers, organizational knowledge or even ambitions and vision for it in our industry.
But damn do I want to be wrong. And if I am, what he offers is probably our best chance out of this mess.

I struggle to believe that in a civilized country a federal fund that provides broadband Internet connection to schools and libraries needs to be put in discussion, all the way up to the Supreme Court, by a bunch of sociopaths who believe that providing fast Internet to students who can’t have it at home is unconstitutional.

Surprisingly, the Supreme Court did a good thing for libraries this term.
Amongst all of the terrible and regressive decisions and shadow docket orders the Supreme Court spewed forth this term, there was a rare, small win for libraries and schools. The story got a little…Literary Hub

The image features a religious icon, likely of the Virgin Mary with the Christ Child, set within a dark wooden frame. The icon is adorned with intricate silver detailing and a richly patterned background. The central figures are depicted in a traditional style, with the Virgin Mary holding the Christ Child close to her chest. The icon's surface is highly reflective, suggesting a metallic finish. The text at the top of the image reads, "Once you see Cookie Monster, you can't unsee it." This text is juxtaposed with the icon, creating a humorous contrast between the sacred imagery and the reference to the popular children's character.

Spreadsheets have one good location in a process: at the top.
They can be directly used as database clients, to good effect.
The Macro-laden sheets I passed around mainly had a "refresh" button, so they didn't have to know to right-click on the pivot table report and pick "refresh" from the database.
On rare occasions, they could also be used to put something into a database, as long as it was manually confirmed for every record.
They can have huge roles in NON-automated updates.

Tun Sie was, Frau EU!

in reply to bert hubert 🇺🇦🇪🇺🇺🇦 • • •I read this wonderful piece as a lay person; I beg your pardon for the ignorance that I'm sure shines from my question.
This sounds to me like needing Infrastructure As A Service (or Platform As A Service). Am I right to say it's the sort of thing for which SlapOS could be used?
I only ask because I've been trying to understand available open-source ERPs recently and am in the (long, for me) process of trying to grok slapOS, and it sounds - again, to my mean understanding - like it could be the sort of thing that contributes to a European solution.

in reply to doboprobodyne • • •not really. I mean sure, it could be "used" as a tool in the whole mix, but it is not really attacking the problem we are talking about here. Making sure that the machines are running and that they are networked is something all of our hosting providers and infrastructure providers know how to do already.
The problem is the UX.
Basically, here is the problem to solve, for one of these modules that @bert_hubert talk about.
I need to be able, in a couple of API calls, to get a managed postgres database, with good default, provisionned under 5min, with a read-replica, a write replica, enough storage, automatic updates in defined weekly windows, easy and downtime free path to update to new version at an API call, with managed IAM access, on the networks, with a dns address I can use in my app, with accounts, passwords, etc, with logging and monitoring, billed by the hour, and in my existing networks. Oh and I need an automatic snapshot every day, that I can recover also with a single API call. Encrypted while you are at it, using a managed service for the keys and HSM, that you also manage, that can also have all these things and more, also in a single API call/push of a button.
And my devs need to be able to demand that, and I
Right now, only AWS can do it. Even GCP and Azure offer only subpar version or partial version of this.
And I need near 100% uptime for it. That I can trust, not just written on a contract.
Thomas Depierre
in reply to Thomas Depierre • • •And I am not being a prick here. This is *literally* the tableskate minimum that I need to be able to recommend you to my employers.
And this is the _minimum_. Once we start leaving just the database layers, I have a lot more demands. And there are a lot of "nice to have but also kinda mandatory" things I have not put there, because once again. What I ask is the *bare minimum to have a seat at the table*
doboprobodyne
in reply to Thomas Depierre • • •Ahh, roger, thank you! That's a really useful explanation; yes, I see why slapOS in and of itself won't cut the mustard. Gosh, I can see why we need this capability from a strategic/geopolitical point of view. Indeed not just Europe; any competent government should want to make sure feedback-loops were set up so that they did not inadvertently lose "digital sovereignty" in such a manner here illustrated.
#capitalism #cybernetics #controlTheory #geopolitics
Thomas Depierre
in reply to doboprobodyne • • •too late. We already lost it. At this point the question is if we actually are serious about taking it back. So far, I am not seeing it. Partially because people do not want to see the size of the risk (too scary) and partially because people really do not want to accept the size of the work needed.
It needs a change of policy and view.
doboprobodyne
in reply to Thomas Depierre • • •gov.uk/government/news/defence…
Truth. We are probably not serious about taking back our digital sovereignty at the moment. You know how it is. Bureaucracies gonna' bureaucrate. I.E.: find the lowest bidder, or someone who takes them out to dinner, or someone who is willing to train their staff on proprietary systems. Or all three. If I see anyone trying to steer the ship toward the right direction I will point them in the direction of Hubert's manifesto.
My money, for where that leadership comes from if & when we see it, is on #Norway or #Finland, but I'm just guessing.
