Then I found out the original theory stated that humans were replaced by bots in 2016-2017 (far before LLMs took off) and that after that date, “global elites” and the Deep State are controlling the human population by manipulating every Google result, and nearly every webpage and news source

These days, it can be the watered down meaning but occasionally you’ll still find some stalwart die hards embracing the original meaning
For that reason I try to use neutral terms like “AI flooding of public spaces”

It was a terrible thing that happened. But they were trying in all fronts. It was the gamers(tm) that fell for it.
The furry communities are aware of the constant tryouts to infiltrate right wing people and talking points (failing spectacularly) and also anime communities (with moderate success).
But it was gaming that was the successful trial. And yes this attempt made them learn how to talk, how to infiltrate, how to do all the things they do now in politics.
