I think I arrive at much the same place as you: a big part of my objection is that Google are the gatekeepers.
Google and their ham-fisted policy implementations are *also* the reason I choose to use F-Droid over the Play store.
I'd have more sympathy for the plans if the trust store was controlled/handled by someone else - that would at least strike the compromise between protecting freedoms and the vulnerable.
But, Google can't be trusted with that kind of power

Just reading about "Managed Play" which does seem to provide the kind of thing our teams will need. Extra effort by the organisation is big enough to handle that.
Might not work so well for smaller companies but as you mentioned there's always uncertified hardware as an option.
I recall that banks tend to be the first to point the finger at 'insecure' client devices, yet their own systems may be full of holes and open to social engineering attacks. I spent ages going through PCI DSS for full stack certification, only to have the bank outsource their own networking to the cheapest bidder and try to persuade me to change the endpoint for *unencrypted transfers* with an unauthenticated, unexpected phone call. Turns out it was genuine. Sigh.
The weird thing about the banking apps example is that pretty much every bank that has a mobile app also has a website with all the same features as the mobile app. Banks say they need all these attestation and fingerprint APIs on mobile for security and act like the world will end if you root your phone, but you can still make a transfer through the website on a 20-year-old laptop running Linux Mint or whatever.
The bank has another option: They can say to me, "You can only run our app on your rooted phone if you sign this waiver that we're not responsible for whatever happens." Why not - they already had me sign such a thing in relation to other products.
Similarly the game co. They _could_ say, "Our game is only certified safe on platforms X and Y. If you run it on anything else you assume all liability for the consequences."
99.9% of users are never going to want to do that anyway.

There was an episode of Scam Secrets on Radio 4 on Thursday (it's available on iPlayer) that was talking about someone who lost thousands of pounds to a APP scammer.
Their bank tried to talk them out of it. They even got the poor mark to take a selfie of themselves, holding a sign saying "My bank has told me this is a scam and I won't see my money again", and send it to them.
Personally I think the right path is a bit of a mix of things. We must - must! - be able to run the software of our own choosing on our devices if we wish to do so. I think there can also be a place for voluntarily trusting a company to verify apps or developers, but it must be voluntary.
Perhaps this can be partly a decision made at the time of purchase. Maybe you can't undo it without factory resetting the phone, which few people will be willing to do on a whim

@neonbubble Do you use Linux? I've toyed with the idea of moving to a Linux Distro instead of Windows, and these machines sound decent and a price worth experimenting with. But I'm put off by how difficult Linux sounds to use for noobs.

The issues arise when you are installing Linux on a non-standard machine, or you are trying to do anything more than everyday tasks.
I'm certainly not tech minded but I've used Linux for years and only hit problems during installation (UEFI which seems to sorted, and Bluetooth drivers which again seems to be a non-issue now). By choosing a modern, well supported version ('distro') such as Mint or Ubuntu you should have very few issues - even less if you buy a box with Linux preinstalled (which is what I'm intending to do next time).
You can try Linux by running it on most Windows machines by using it on a USB stick.
Linux is no where near as scary as some people want you to believe!

Così su due piedi: kaki (varietà vaniglia, fa meno squacquero ed è più piacevole da mangiare), albicocco (se è riparato dai venti principali) o gelso (crescita rapida ed "edificabile" per grandi e piccini). I use @MonaApp and I’m having a problem that might be related to it. My husband was on the Astrodon server, which was shut down. Before it shut down, he moved to chaos.social. When I type in his handle @spsheridan, at the bottom of the Mona window I’m shown both his old and new server. I need the old one on Astrodon to disappear because I keep accidentally selecting it. If I use the web interface, I see only one of him (and it’s the right one.)
Any idea how I get Mona to stop offering it to me?
Mention suggestions come from posts displayed in the app, so there must be some posts that either came from the old account or mentioned that account.
Currently, you should be able to fix the issue by removing your account from Mona, waiting a few seconds (as the app deletes caches in background), quitting the app, then adding your account to Mona again.
Yesterday I looked for a way to remove my account, but only saw the option to **delete** my account, but today I found the Edit button and removed the account. When I re-added on two devices so far, the phantom account is gone! Curious though, yesterday one of my test devices wasn't logged into Mona, and when I logged in the phantom account was there. In any case, thanks!!!

What about companies who use Android on handheld or embedded devices who don't want to share their software with anyone?
