"In the nearly two years since Israel’s assault on Gaza began, at least initially in response to the Hamas attack on 7 October, over 60,000 Palestinians have been killed. Entire cities lie in ruins, starvation is widespread, and a growing chorus of international legal experts warn of a looming genocide. Despite this, the European Union continues its preferential trade and research partnership with Israel under the EU–Israel Association Agreement — an agreement that is conditional on respect for human rights. Calls to suspend it are growing across Europe, yet EU institutions have so far declined to act.

Marc Botenga, Member of the European Parliament (MEP) from the Workers’ Party of Belgium (PTB/PVDA) and Vice-Chair of the Left group in the European Parliament, has been a leading critic of the EU’s response to Israel’s actions in Gaza and the occupation of Palestinian territory. In April 2025, he proposed a resolution on the immediate suspension of the EU-Israel Association Agreement with a group of fifteen MEPs. Recently, he spoke with the Rosa Luxemburg Foundation’s Alexandra Gerasimcikova about his views and the next political steps the Left in Europe can take."

DHS Secretary Kristi Noem fires 24 FEMA IT staffers, including the CIO and CISO; DHS says they failed security protocols and let hackers access Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) networks

cross-posted from: programming.dev/post/36577114

FEMA Chief Information Officer (CIO) Charles Armstrong, Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) Gregory Edwards, and 22 other FEMA IT employees directly responsible were immediately terminated.

While conducting a routine cybersecurity review, the DHS Office of the Chief Information Officer (OCIO) discovered significant security vulnerabilities that gave a threat actor access to FEMA’s network. The investigation uncovered several severe lapses in security that allowed the threat actor to breach FEMA’s network and threaten the entire Department and the nation as a whole.

The entrenched bureaucrats who led FEMA’s IT team for decades resisted any efforts to fix the problem. Instead, they avoided scheduled inspections and lied to officials about the scope and scale of the cyber vulnerabilities.

Failures included: an agency-wide lack of multi-factor authentication, use of prohibited legacy protocols, failing to fix known and critical vulnerabilities, and inadequate operational visibility.

FEMA spent nearly half a billion dollars on IT and cybersecurity measures in Fiscal Year 2025 alone and delivered virtually nothing for the American people. Despite burning hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars, FEMA’s IT leadership still neglected its basic duties and exposed the entire Department to cyberattacks.

Libertarians must be obsessed about liberty now.

Talk to people everywhere. Pass out flyers. Print out business cards. Make a website. Start a newspaper. Rent a billboard. Make songs and movies about freedom.

You might be the last one defending freedom, but you must live with your conscience.

This frightens the hell out of me.

Social work already was under invested in and I grew up not trusting social workers.

Anyone who remembers various social work decisions that turned into a scandal will I suspect, be incredibly worried about this becoming a norm.

@onepict
Presumably by the time something goes wrong with local government decisions, the people responsible have moved on? (In some cases with brown envelopes to fall back on...)

Is there any precedent for holding government decision makers legally responsible after they've changed jobs?
