I've posted on this before, but I'll say it again: your one-stop shop for guidance on the current political hellscape is Harry Frankfurt's great little book, On Bullshit.
The central argument is that while the liar has some regard for the truth, as they need to avoid it (or obscure it), the bullshitter has no regard for truth whatsoever, but merely says what is expedient in the moment (and indeed may change position/pronouncement as their needs/interests change).
