But I’ll say it outright: a well-serviced cassette deck will run circles around vinyl. Cleaner, warmer, more dynamic—without all the pops and skips people pretend are “character.”
The problem isn’t money. You can get a solid deck cheap. The real cost is time. You have to know which models are worth buying, then find one that’s been properly serviced. And here’s the kicker—even if it’s a great deck, leave it alone too long and it’ll start slipping.
That’s why cassettes are both the best and the most maddening format. They’ll give you sound that shocks skeptics, and then punish you for daring to neglect them.

Oh God, here he comes with another long thread about mental illness. Let me begin by writing that I agree with those who believe the Trump administration cannot be trusted to reform mental healthcare in the United States by keeping the best interests of patients in mind. Their approaches to issues have proven to be simpleminded and cruel. The “defund, incarcerate, disappear” in the title of the attached article may unfortunately be close to the truth. (1/12)

I want to share something I'm really proud of.
In late July, I came across a 2016 article from the Novo Nordisk Foundation. It discussed intersex women, including those with XY chromosomes, but the language was outdated, reductionist, and stigmatizing. It called them "genetically men," leaned on biological determinism, and framed their lives through a medical lens that undermined their dignity.
I couldn't let that stand, so I wrote to them. I explained why the language was harmful, pointed to current science and bioethics, and asked them to take responsibility.
To their credit, they listened. They replied quickly, acknowledged my concerns, and began reviewing the article. A couple of weeks later they sent me a revised draft. They had already removed the misgendering, replaced pathologizing phrases, and shifted the framing away from chromosomes as destiny. I suggested a few more adjustments to make the language even more accurate and affirming.
At the end of August, they published the updated article in English and Danish. The harmful wording is largely gone. The framing now centers human diversity, patient-centered care, and informed consent.
It may not sound dramatic, but these changes matter. Words shape how people see themselves, how they are treated by doctors, and how society understands trans and intersex lives. Correcting language in a piece like this helps chip away at stigma that has caused harm for decades.
Here's what this looked like in practice for me: I was assertive. I named where I disagreed. I brought factual evidence. I kept the exchange in good faith. I stayed open to change and supported it when it happened.
It is one article, one institution, one moment. Little by little, contribution by contribution, we are changing things. I'm proud that I stood up and made a difference here, and I'll keep doing what I can to push for a world where our communities are seen, respected, and affirmed. 💜

I don't know what that article read like before, but it seemed pretty even-handed now, so good work!
side note: it's really hard to get people a numeric sense of scale, and I didn't see any actual statistics on what the normal range of XY women were, is it 1:100, 1:1000, 1:100000, etc. Obviously (well to some people) this is just the normal variation that makes up the spice of life, but whenever talking about different minority groups its always good to get a sense of scale, what's the percentage and the total number in a given geographic area, might be a good frame for amateurs to get their head around.
@raven667 Hey from your friendly sexual and reproductive health educator! About 3% of the population have at least one difference of sexual development (DSD), about the same as the % who report exclusive same gender attraction.
Also, going a little deeper, you don't need a sense of scale to get your head around rights issues for minority groups. Rights are scale invariant.

I'm going to try to focus the damn meteor/satellite tracking cameras again. They don't seem to be staying in focus, and I have them set up in a way that it's a GIGANTIC pain to focus them.
Remove tiny screws while standing on a ladder, then precariously set up my monitor and keyboard on the raspberry pi's in my basement, then run back outside and up on the ladder while talking on the phone with someone else watching the monitor in the basement. Then put screws back on in the dark, on ladder.

Haha loads of people asking questions: the reason this is extra hard is because it's someone else's janky setup and I know nothing about it! I don't want to tinker (and I definitely don't know enough to tinker effectively) so I appreciate all the suggestions but I just have to wait for the builders to answer my emails.
