Authoritarianism of the kind that Americans are used to condemning abroad has become increasingly normal in the United States.

The cult of personality was apparent as Donald Trump’s cabinet convened on Wednesday in a marathon session that could have embarrassed even a seasoned strongman, providing for three hours and 17 minutes of fawning television coverage.

There was Steve Witkoff, the president’s top envoy and negotiator, standing up in the increasingly gilded Cabinet Room, offering praise that could have made even Vladimir Putin blush.
“There’s only one thing I wish for
– that the Nobel committee finally gets its act together and realizes that you are the single finest candidate since this Nobel award was ever talked about,”
he said to applause from secretaries of state, defense and other top cabinet officials.

Or was it Stephen Miller on Fox News in effect criminalising the opposition to Trump and calling Chicago a “killing field” despite controverting facts.
“The Democrat party is not a political party, it is a domestic extremist organisation,” he said in a strident tone,
claiming that the party was devoted “exclusively to the defence of hardened criminals, gangbangers and illegal alien killers and terrorists”.

Was it the president calling, on social media, for the arrest of a wealthy financier and his son for their support for civil society?
“George Soros, and his wonderful Radical Left son, should be charged with RICO because of their support of Violent Protests, and much more, all throughout the United States of America,” he wrote on Truth Social.

Or perhaps it was the revocation of Secret Service protection for his electoral rival Kamala Harris,
or the FBI raid on the home of John Bolton, his former national security adviser, who has become an outspoken critic of the president’s national security agenda.
Or was it in the commonplace nature of a raid outside an elementary school in Mt Pleasant in Washington DC, where police staked out a school with a large Spanish-speaking population in what became just another immigration raid in America.

Don Moynihan, a political scientist and professor at the University of Michigan, wrote this week that “today, America is a competitive authoritarian system, with a rapidly increasing emphasis on the authoritarian part.”

The checklist to consolidate power, he wrote, includes efforts to control the government bureaucracy,
the military, internal security, the legal system, civil society, higher education, the media and elections.
The pursuit of those aims had been “systematic”, he wrote.

I believe Judge Sooknanan was woken up at 3am today with an emergency motion in this case, and is still going strong holding the government's feet to the fire. In the middle of a holiday weekend.

I'm sure she's delighted.

Stuff like this is one reason I have no patience with the "why are you even trying, Trump can do whatever he wants, rule of law is dead, etc" nihilists.

The rule of law is under great strain right now, but still matters a lot. But if we abandon it, it dies.

Its clear that Trump is effectively if not literally a Russian agent hell bent on destroying the USA...

"As president of the Massachusetts AFL-CIO Chrissy Lynch said in July after the Republicans passed the budget reconciliation bill cutting clean energy tax credits: “Working families shouldn’t have to purchase energy from billionaire oil tycoons and foreign governments or let them set the price of our energy bills.”

Her observation hit home earlier this week, when Joe Wallace, Costas Paris, Alex Leary, and Collin Eaton of the Wall Street Journal reported that the comments of Russian president Vladimir Putin and Trump at their meeting in Alaska on August 15 in which they talked about doing more business together were not vague goodwill. ExxonMobil and Russia’s biggest energy company, Rosneft, have been in secret talks to resume a partnership to extract Russian oil, including in the Arctic, that had been severed by Russia’s attack on Ukraine in 2022."

To everyone with a hangup on pronouns — we have a gal/guy in our area who identifies as male or female depending on who the fuck knows what. He/she is a huge chick/dude, with serious attitude if you fuck up. You know what? All of my fire medics just straight ask her/him “hey there, are ____ or ____ today, and let’s get ya taken care of”, and they never have a fucking problem. Ditto for the ER peeps who aren’t just being assholes for the sake of assholery. Literally one sentence, and you’re good.

I was never mocked on Mastodon for putting up pronouns on my profile. Not even once.

In contrast, this happened on Twitter/X all the time.

People who don’t know better laugh at me.

But I’ll say it outright: a well-serviced cassette deck will run circles around vinyl. Cleaner, warmer, more dynamic—without all the pops and skips people pretend are “character.”

The problem isn’t money. You can get a solid deck cheap. The real cost is time. You have to know which models are worth buying, then find one that’s been properly serviced. And here’s the kicker—even if it’s a great deck, leave it alone too long and it’ll start slipping.

That’s why cassettes are both the best and the most maddening format. They’ll give you sound that shocks skeptics, and then punish you for daring to neglect them.

AI NEWSWIRE: Startup Once Worth $1.5 Billion Now Worthless

A low-light image shows the facade of a building, dominated by dark blue and black tones with bright white and blue light accents. At the top, a large, rectangular, horizontally oriented sign glows with bright white text displaying "Builder.ai" against a dark background. Below this prominent sign, the building features dark-framed glass windows. Behind the glass on the right, a vertical banner or screen is prominently displayed with white text on a dark background, reading: "Turn your idea into an app, fast". On the left, through the glass, a dark interior with blue-tinted light and a smaller "Builder.ai" logo is visible.

I want to share something I'm really proud of.

In late July, I came across a 2016 article from the Novo Nordisk Foundation. It discussed intersex women, including those with XY chromosomes, but the language was outdated, reductionist, and stigmatizing. It called them "genetically men," leaned on biological determinism, and framed their lives through a medical lens that undermined their dignity.

I couldn't let that stand, so I wrote to them. I explained why the language was harmful, pointed to current science and bioethics, and asked them to take responsibility.

To their credit, they listened. They replied quickly, acknowledged my concerns, and began reviewing the article. A couple of weeks later they sent me a revised draft. They had already removed the misgendering, replaced pathologizing phrases, and shifted the framing away from chromosomes as destiny. I suggested a few more adjustments to make the language even more accurate and affirming.

At the end of August, they published the updated article in English and Danish. The harmful wording is largely gone. The framing now centers human diversity, patient-centered care, and informed consent.

It may not sound dramatic, but these changes matter. Words shape how people see themselves, how they are treated by doctors, and how society understands trans and intersex lives. Correcting language in a piece like this helps chip away at stigma that has caused harm for decades.

Here's what this looked like in practice for me: I was assertive. I named where I disagreed. I brought factual evidence. I kept the exchange in good faith. I stayed open to change and supported it when it happened.

It is one article, one institution, one moment. Little by little, contribution by contribution, we are changing things. I'm proud that I stood up and made a difference here, and I'll keep doing what I can to push for a world where our communities are seen, respected, and affirmed. 💜

I don't know what that article read like before, but it seemed pretty even-handed now, so good work!

side note: it's really hard to get people a numeric sense of scale, and I didn't see any actual statistics on what the normal range of XY women were, is it 1:100, 1:1000, 1:100000, etc. Obviously (well to some people) this is just the normal variation that makes up the spice of life, but whenever talking about different minority groups its always good to get a sense of scale, what's the percentage and the total number in a given geographic area, might be a good frame for amateurs to get their head around.

in reply to Raven667

@raven667 Hey from your friendly sexual and reproductive health educator! About 3% of the population have at least one difference of sexual development (DSD), about the same as the % who report exclusive same gender attraction.

Also, going a little deeper, you don't need a sense of scale to get your head around rights issues for minority groups. Rights are scale invariant.
