While we can all understand why people would want to disengage from the news (when we're living through such a hellish time), but when people do disengage, the Q. is how do they then form political views (because they will certainly still have them)?
Does this disengagement serve populists who offer simple (but often mistaken) 'solutions' to problems?
Does disengagement allow people to build views based on ethical grounds?
Its an interesting issue - I think ethical views at their most basic stem from the values inculcated into us by our parents - mine certainly were.... so, it may be that when we self-engage these ethical commitments we can be less dependent on the news to know what we think about politics?.... or maybe I'm just being idealistic?
yes, I'd agree, I was starting with the parents, but would agree on the social groupings' influence.... I guess my point is that can be a lot more significant than watching or not watching the news? But that said, its intuition, not based on any data or research I have in my hand
@TCatInReality - whilst mine must at some point have started with my parents, I diverged rapidly from them when at university. Now I look back on my life and see just what a major part books have played in moulding and reinforcing the moral and ethical viewpoints I had formed first for myself in the company of other students and listening to left wing speakers. But then many of the books were about morality and ethics...!
Prior to the age of 24 hour rolling news and mobile phone alerts we all managed to get along fine with maybe hearing or reading some news once or twice a day. The news bulletins were mostly short with only the major evening news programmes stretching to half an hour (Today programme excepted). People weren’t ‘disengaged’. They simply weren’t obsessed. It was (and is) possible to liven informed life without saturation coverage. Very little is existentially necessary.

I don't have an answer to the question, but the first thought that came to my very sleepy mind was: if disengagement with news served populists, why are populists so desperate to take over the news?
For me, formation of political views begins with personal policies, e.g. one of my policies is in cooking, to try and pair ingredients with complementary flavours. And the formation of that arose out of my engagement with (i.e. beyond merely doing) the process of cooking.
I dunno, maybe leaving people space / mental bandwidth to engage with something, anything, could help keep populist simplism at bay?
Every major news organization is owned and controlled by the ownership class, who use it to promote and validate their worldview that they are superior to the average person.
All news is inherently biased - the current news organizations and the folks who own them have just perfected it.
News is no more than gossip. Politics - at least as you discuss them here - is about centralized control.
This is why I still believe in social media - and, in particular, decentralized social media, like ActivityPub.
We can and should run our own instances for ourselves and the communities who matter to us.
We should share news among each other, focus on building local economies.
We should negotiate how to break away from centralized politics controlled by selfish money perverts who only care for themselves and rebuild the communities they destroyed.
Certainly some politics *is* local and benefits from being discussed/decided at a local level, but that's not true for all politics... there's a lot going on that has a local impact but is not local politics
It has outsized local impact because we have abdicated too much local control to distant "leaders" who fail to take local needs into account when making decisions that affect us.
The last few decades has been a continual movement of taking away community control and centralizing it among governments and national / multinational corporations.
That makes us all far too dependent on people who are operating a scale where we don't matter.

I'm in California. I have done an extensive amount of traveling throughout the UK and Europe. Our systems are very similar on the surface, but the differences cut so deep I honestly think we're incapable of truly understanding each other.

I wonder if the poor reliability of the mainstream news media is part of the problem. I know from personal experience a news report as given on TV news is very different from what those involved/witnesses reported. Even to the extent of getting the location wrong .... Why listen to factual inaccuracies interspersed with opinion & forecasts of future events based on briefings? It doesn't inform you, it's worse than Pravda in Brezhnev's day. The UK has no reliable factual sources.
Many years ago I stopped getting the Economist as they reported on a set of events & circumstances I was involved with & got it completely wrong & then that drove an analysis that missed the point of what had happened.... I thought, well if they got this so wrong, perhaps they're getting other stuff wrong too & cancelled my subscription - never regretted it

But the couple said the high prices and overall experience is getting worse every time. Tom McElhinney said the Strip’s elevated costs are driving them away.
“The food is expensive, hotels are expensive,” Tom McElhinney said standing between Harrah’s Las Vegas and The Linq. “There’s great stuff to do here. I just don’t want to have to pay $400 for every meal. There used to be bargains and going to buffets, but it seems like those are all disappearing.
“You used to be able to play $5 blackjack everywhere, but now everything is high,” Tom McElhinney continued. “The allure here is gone. Vegas is really pricing people out.”
Strip resort operators are facing the industry’s worst economic downturn since the Great Recession 15 years ago. Gaming revenue at Strip resorts has declined in four of the last seven months and is essentially flat compared to 2024. Despite optimism from casino CEOs, analysts expect the Strip to face ongoing challenges into the fall.
There are also fewer Las Vegas visitors. Through July, the Strip has drawn more than 22.6 million visitors, down by 2 million from a year ago, an 8 percent decline.
Labor Day weekend, normally one of the year’s busiest holidays, is expected to see a nearly 2 percent drop in visitation, according to the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority. The three-day weekend is expected to draw 320,000 visitors, down from 326,000 a year ago.
One challenge facing resort operators is the message on social media and other platforms is that Las Vegas is overpriced and no longer a value to the travel consumer.
Chicago visitor Patty Steiner said she usually comes every year to Las Vegas. But she’s not making plans to come back in 2026, as airline tickets and other expenses have gone up in cost.
“Everything is high. I just feel like it’s going to be a long road,” Steiner said. “The prices are outrageous. The food is crazy. I’m just very unhappy.”
Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority CEO Steve Hill said he doesn’t believe in that narrative. At a media briefing Friday, Hill defended Las Vegas as a value destination and said the market has options to suit all consumers.
“Don’t just believe what you read. Go and do a little bit of work,” Hill said. “Call a travel agent, call on the properties. See what the price of Las Vegas really is, rather than some general headline that, frankly, is not accurate.”

This was my very first photo with the #Pentax 17 on our summer trip. We were already in Italy, spending the night in a suburb of #Milan. As it was getting dark, we walked to a pizzeria. Across the street, I spotted this completely worn-out poster, with only the face of a woman still visible. I have no idea what or who it originally advertised. (Anyone from Milan recognize it?) It looked like an official #billboard, maybe even from the elections… Hopefully not the fascists, because I hate them. Otherwise, I find the decay of images and material absolutely fascinating.

But life is full of examples of people whose values changed radically after being normalised by others.
Who you surround yourself with (and what you spend you time on) will naturally have an effect on your value system.
