I was thinking of the copy of Encarta 1997 that my family had when I was a kid. It wasn't just a landmark in hypertext and the CD-ROM, but it showcased a belief that multimedia would just become the future of everything, and that giving people information was a good in and of itself.

I know people who have trimmed the plugs on their bar tape to save half a gram. People who only wrap part of the bar so they don't waste energy hauling extra bar tape up hills.
Note that actual pro racers don't bother with that nonsense. One of the few wise things the UCI ever did was impose a minimum weight rule for bikes, which is still crazy light.
