I myself was stationed at the Poetry Section. When the call to arms was sounded, we tore the dust jackets from rare volumes to fashion shields. One poor lad fell clutching a first edition of Vonnegut, whispering with his last breath, “So it goes.”
The carnage was indescribable. The Travel Section lies in ruins; the Graphic Novels scattered like leaves in the wind. Yet still the banner of Stumptown Volunteers flies above the checkout counter, defiantly taped to the plexiglass sneeze guard.
Libby, though our cause is just, I fear we cannot hold Powell’s forever. The Guard has entrenched themselves near the Espresso Book Machine, and whispers spread that they plan to conscript the baristas into service. Should they seize the Rare Book Room, I tremble for the fate of democracy itself.
Pray for us, my beloved. If Providence grants me safe return, I shall bring you spoils of war — perhaps even a dog-eared paperback of The Great Gatsby, still reeking of smoke and revolution.

The laptop I'm testing #guix on is a 2019 celeron with 4GB RAM and 64GB emmc. Its basically a 2019 Chromebook thing. I can get i5-8000 with 4GB/128GB for like $65/ea in lots on eBay. So the idea is test out the usability of this little Chromebook type thing with zram and see if I can imagine giving nontech people refurbed machines with a similarly configured install.
Not sure pushing Guix to nontech people is a nice thing to do ;)
But maybe you're thinking about the hardware + zram + linux setup? For easy use it will probably be more than enough, but many applications and sites hog resources like crazy these days.
I haven't met many people who has ever touched a profiler unfortunately.
@simendsjo The people I'm thinking of giving this to have no skills to maintain a Windows, Mac, or Linux system. A system thats preconfigured with everything they'd want and then just works for a few years and can be upgraded by bringing it back and asking to update it is just what they need... At most they need flatpak for updating the browser in between. They aren't gonna look under the hood so what's there doesn't much matter to them.
They need security patches and maybe other bugfixes. Guix easily gets technical as it's a fast-moving target which breaks things quite often. I would think your user-group needs something with really LTS where they only get bugfixes and security patches. Sure, you can build this on top of Guix with your own channel, but then it must be maintained.
@simendsjo They really dont because they aren't gonna use them anyway. Think people still running windows 8. The updates can come by bringing the device to an update event where we install a new guix system image we've crafted from tested versions.
Flatpak for browser updates is already better than what they've got.
