Centinaia di studenti hanno sfidato la pioggia mercoledì pomeriggio per assistere all'evento al Padiglione dell'Università del Mississippi. La folla, radunata fin dalle prime ore del mattino, indossava cappelli MAGA e magliette con la scritta "Freedom" in omaggio all'attivista conservatore. Leslie Lachman, presidente del capitolo locale di Turning Point USA, ha raccontato a Fox News che l'energia sul campus era elettrica e che gli studenti hanno fatto la fila per ore sotto la pioggia. La scelta dell'università è stata vista come un onore, considerando che molti altri atenei hanno opposto resistenza al riconoscimento dei capitoli di Turning Point.
L'evento rappresenta l'unica tappa del tour nazionale in cui Erika Kirk è apparsa personalmente. La vedova ha spiegato di aver pregato a lungo prima di decidere di salire sul palco, data la forte carica emotiva della giornata. "Potevo sentire Charlie nel mio cuore dirmi: vai a riprenderti quel territorio", ha detto agli studenti presenti. Kirk ha descritto la presenza sul campus come una "rivendicazione spirituale del territorio" e ha ringraziato i diecimila studenti per il sostegno ricevuto. "Non ci ha lasciati a mani vuote. Ha costruito una macchina e tutti voi ne fate parte", ha aggiunto.
Vance ha ricevuto una forte ovazione quando è salito sul palco per rispondere alle domande degli studenti, seguendo il formato reso celebre da Charlie Kirk nei suoi eventi sui campus universitari. Durante uno degli scambi più accesi della serata, una studentessa ha posto domande sul matrimonio interculturale del vicepresidente con Usha, cresciuta in una famiglia induista. Vance ha spiegato che lui e sua moglie hanno deciso di crescere i figli come cristiani e che spera un giorno che lei diventi cattolica, pur rispettando il suo libero arbitrio. La stessa studentessa ha interrogato Vance sulle politiche restrittive sull'immigrazione. Il vicepresidente ha dichiarato che vorrebbe limitare severamente l'immigrazione legale finché i migranti già nel paese non si integreranno meglio, ricevendo applausi quando ha affermato che il suo compito è difendere gli interessi degli Stati Uniti, non quelli del mondo.

Il vicepresidente ha rivelato di aver ricevuto una telefonata da Charlie Kirk pochi mesi prima della sua morte. Kirk era preoccupato che la situazione in Medio Oriente portasse gli Stati Uniti in un conflitto militare prolungato. Vance ha attribuito a questo avvertimento il fatto che il presidente Trump abbia ordinato attacchi aerei contro le strutture nucleari iraniane senza coinvolgere il paese in un conflitto prolungato e senza perdere un solo soldato americano. "Charlie Kirk mi ha ricordato quanto questa questione sia importante per gli americani", ha detto Vance.
Durante l'evento, alcuni presenti hanno scandito "48" in riferimento a una possibile candidatura di Vance alla presidenza nel 2028, ma il vicepresidente ha invitato alla calma dicendo di non correre troppo. Vance ha concluso il suo intervento esortando gli studenti a impegnarsi attivamente in politica per salvare il paese. "Il più grande contributo che potete dare all'eredità di Charlie Kirk è coinvolgervi e salvare questa nazione", ha detto. "Non limitatevi a lamentarvi sui social media. Alzatevi e impegnatevi in una campagna".
L'assassinio di Kirk il 10 settembre scorso alla Utah Valley University ha suscitato indignazione nazionale sulla violenza politica. Da allora, Turning Point USA ha registrato oltre 50mila nuove richieste di adesione e apertura di capitoli nella settimana successiva alla sua morte. L'organizzazione, fondata da Kirk nel 2012, è diventata una forza importante nella politica universitaria americana, promuovendo ideali conservatori come libero mercato, governo limitato e libertà individuale.

A full day in #Dominica yesterday. We took a tour with two Americans to the north of the island, putting our hands in cold, bubbling, volcanic springs, visiting a fort, having lunch of chicken roti in #Portsmouth (good name that), then being rowed up a river, all in ferocious heat. But on the row back we got hit by a tropical downpour. Hilarious screeching from our rower and us, all drenched, so much fun.
