Ultimately, an Xbox running full Windows is a win for Linux.

Why? Because it pushes PC gaming on a TV into the mainstream. And once that happens, people will start realizing something obvious: “Wait a second—I could just build a small ITX PC, install Linux, and get better performance than an Xbox.”

That’s already the story playing out with the ROG Ally. The hardware’s there, the software’s catching up—and Linux keeps closing the gap.
RE: atomicpoet.org/objects/4ce539b…

Okay, but what if I told you Windows has already been a game console for more than a decade? I know—because I’ve been running Windows on my TV that long.

Windows is the reason I stopped buying Xbox hardware. Hear me out.

For nearly 20 years, Windows has supported Xbox gamepads natively. I still remember playing Serious Sam 2 on my roommate’s 1080p TV and thinking, “If Windows just had a proper launcher, this would be killer.”

Fast forward to 2012. Valve rolled out Big Picture mode for Steam—and that problem was solved. Suddenly, the entire interface was gamepad-friendly, and you could even tell Steam to “Start in Big Picture Mode” on launch. It turned Windows into a full console experience overnight.

Is it as seamless as an Xbox or PlayStation? No. But the tradeoff is worth it. Because when you use Windows as a console, you get the biggest game library in history. Steam alone has well over 100,000 titles—and that’s just one storefront.

So yes, I’ll take a few minor inconveniences for that kind of access. That’s why Microsoft’s next move—a set-top box running full Windows—makes perfect sense.

The real question is how Valve responds. After all, they’ve been pushing Linux hard, and thanks to Proton, more than 90% of Windows games already run on Linux. Could this be the moment Valve revisits the Steam Machine idea?

Called it.

Microsoft’s moving away from the walled-garden model of the old Xbox and heading toward a full-Windows set-top box.

Actually, that’s the only move that makes sense. Valve has been eating Microsoft’s lunch on the PC gaming front for years—and this is their only real way to fight back.

in reply to Chris Trottier

rest assured that somebody somewhere will make something better, and far less expensively. Microsoft doesn’t have a great track record, and they, like Google, kill more projects than they ever start. This said, gaming is so little a thing on my radar anymore. I like Minecraft. That’s it. Well, that and older Doom2 engine games. I won’t be buying a pc any time soon, let alone a fancy video card. This stuff just isn’t for me.
in reply to Callista Graves

@csgraves Gaming is definitely on my radar. It’s the hobby I spend most of my money on.

How many truckloads does it take?

The jewel heist at the Louvre proves what I’ve long felt, that going to an art museum induces stupor and you don’t notice what’s right in front of you clearer than day.
Americans under 65 are too young to remember Watergate, how a piddly little break-in at Democratic headquarters, the theft of some papers, led to the resignation of President Richard Nixon at the urging of his fellow Republicans. The country has come to accept insults twenty times more gigantic than ever before. Watergate was a slap in the face and the past nine months have been a dozen truckloads of horse manure dumped on your front yard. But after the second truckload, you don’t really notice. You pull your shades and use a lot of air freshener and go out the back door and hope for a good heavy rainstorm.

Sounds like the US is headed to municipal elections everywhere shortly. Two interesting points:

#Mamdani is poised to win the NYC mayorship. (Yay!) and…

#Minneapolis is using #RankedBallot voting. Glad to see that (slowly) moving forward! Maybe some other US cities too?

My strong belief is that ranked ballot is perhaps the only thing that'll save democracy from creeping authoritarianism and associated electoral manipulation.

Voters could be asked in the 2026 election if they want to change the name of Broward County, Fla., to “Lauderdale County.”
A Republican state legislator and a Democratic county commissioner want to ditch the 110-year-old name for what they see as a more marketeable brand.
Others decry the idea as a waste of money and abandonment of history.

DHS is Tolkien posting and chuds still don't get Tolkien
in reply to PallasRiot

"There won't be a Shire anymore"

When the War of the Ring comes to the Shire it's because Lotho Sackville-Baggins made a fortune selling pipeweed to Saruman, and he uses that fortune to gain power over his fellows. Lotho industrializes and militarizes the Shire. Prior to this the Shire has literally twelve law enforcement officers and no written laws, but Lotho uses his wealth to get many hobbits to turn on their neighbors and join the sheriffs. Saruman eventually arrives and takes over, killing Lotho and expanding the militarization and industrialization. Our heroes carry out the Scouring of the Shire, where the Shire is liberated.

This is literally a story of a capitalist turning to fascists for greater control and tyrannizing his own people through surveillance, paramilitary occupation, expasion of security forces, and legalism, before that homegrown fascism grows beyond his control.

ICE is the Chief's men you stupid fucks

in reply to PallasRiot

This is your regular reminder that Tolkien self identified his politics with anarchism, his notion of a good king was the idea of someone who could hold all the power bu never use it so that no one could actually wield state power, his anti-industrialism is based in his hatred for people being instrumentalized into mere tools therefor robbing their work of meaning and individual expression, and one of his most consistent values throughout his life and writings was anti-authoritarianism.

Chuds literally do not understand Tolkien and use like three coffee table book facts about his life to claim he was right-wing because they want to adopt a Tolkien aesthetic*.

*actually a Peter Jackson aesthetic but they don't know the difference because they don't read

omg, THIS

I was bordering on apoplectic when I first heard about K-12 teachers forbidding students from using Wikipedia but then teaching them to use LLMs.

in reply to Paul Cantrell

The most Britannica manages to mention of what was actually in that land is this:

❝Much of the territory turned out to contain rich mineral resources, productive soil, valuable grazing land, forests, and wildlife resources of inestimable value.❞

Not a single mention, AFAICT, of the fact that there were already people there.

4/

in reply to Paul Cantrell

I remember being extremely confused about this as a kid when I first heard about the Louisiana Purchase. How could the US “purchase” land that nobody from the nation had even explored? Didn’t the people who live there own it? Huh?!?

Wikipedia, for all its messiness, answered Young Paul’s question. Britannica buried it.

But guess which one teachers are •still• trying to keep out of education.

in reply to Paul Cantrell

One muddle-headed way of looking at this is “oooooo Wikipedia is wooooke blah blah.”

The better way of looking at it is that Wikipedia lets people jump in and say “What?! No, you are totally missing something important!” It actually •does• the thing the radical centrists (falsely) claim they want: it opens itself to different perspectives.

6/

in reply to Paul Cantrell

As humans, we •all• live our lives with our heads up our butts — including but not limited to the Britannica writers. If we’re lucky, someone will help us see what we’re missing. If we’re wise, we listen. At its best, that’s what Wikipedia can do — and in public, at scale, for everyone.

7/

in reply to Paul Cantrell

I remember years ago seeing a study that diligently compared the factual accuracy of Britannica vs Wikipedia for a few select articles (will update this post w/link if I find it).

They found a similar rate of factual errors. The short of it: Wikipedia is chaotic and messy, but Britannica often had missing or out-of-date information. Wikipedia had higher noise, but also a higher correction rate. Factuality came out about a wash.

[UPDATE] I think it was this study: nature.com/articles/438900a

Wikipedia has •numerous• problems, but it belongs in education.

And right now, per the McSweeney’s OP, it’s a lifeboat of humanity in a sea of slop.

The name "Encyclopædia Britannica" alone should indicate that colonial bias is ever present. Its articles on Irish based topics are, I think the most appropriate word is, "fascinating".

Brussels rushes to complete the Lisbon-Madrid 'missing link' in the high-speed rail network.

Travel by train between the capitals of Spain and Portugal should take no more than 5 hours by the end of the decade – and just 3 hours by 2034 – according to plans unveiled by the European Commission.

The EU-backed project is key to connecting Iberia with France and Germany and shifting passengers from planes to trains.
