I also talked a little about investing and about moving across the country. To be clear, nothing that I said was intended as a linear "if you do this, then you will find what you're looking for," but, from the point of view of doing what we can as individuals, it is about positioning ourselves to increase our chances of finding opportunities.

Hardin's original piece attempts to argue that only by privatizing everything can breakdown be avoided. This is through some stupid-ass game theory malarkey about how only an owner has an interest in the continued prosperity of the object in question.
This is obviously disproven by any look at how profit-oriented owners manage resources.
Game theory is like that. Full of "logical" conclusions that are disproven by even the slightest bit of empiricism.

Elinor's life work on commons taught us all that Hardin's story of the tragedy was wrong. Your understanding of it as a parable teaching importance of governance is due to Elinor.
Oh, and Elinor did it with both an incredible body of empirical work and game theory.

in reply to miss ana vampires 🧛♀️ • • •That Hardin popularised the term doesn't mean he invented the concept. The discussion of commons' overuse for lack of society dates back to Aristotle, and history is full of practical examples (such as Steller's sea cows).
Academic research, such as Ostrom's, handle how a society administers a resource: it doesn't refute the tragedy when society fails to establish itself, or destructs.
Hardin's contribution was neoliberal/authoritarian, and a poor one.
Doesn't mean the term isn't apt.
