The Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado is “safe” and “will be” in Oslo after “a journey in a situation of extreme danger,” although she will not attend the Nobel peace prize ceremony this afternoon, organisers have said.
Machado has been seen only once in public since going into hiding in August last year amid a tense showdown with the president, Nicolás Maduro. Venezuela’s attorney general has said Machado, 58, would be considered a “fugitive” if she left the country to accept the award.

Is Trump’s stark new security strategy the end of the liberal world order? Europeans will need convincing
U.S. President Donald Trump’s new national security strategy appears to blow up some of the key principles behind 80 years of European collective defence, challenging the foundation of the continent’s relationship with the country.
But on whether the White House will — or even can — follow through on many of its more radical or transformative demands, many European capitals will likely need more convincing.
In a blistering attack, Trump’s new policy portrays Europe’s governments as weak and ineffective. Migration has destroyed the continent’s self-confidence, it claims, accusing the European Union of contributing to a loss of national sovereignty, weakened political freedoms and the diminished effectiveness of individual nation states.
Not a word is mentioned of Russia being an adversary — or the instigator of a horrific, ongoing war against its neighbour Ukraine.
The document does not say the U.S. core interest should be the defeat of Russia and the return of Ukraine’s territories, but rather that it should seek to restore “strategic stability" with Russia.

Don't buy into his rule-by-decree framing. Just because Trump wants something doesn't mean he'll get it. If he can't get what he wants by bluster and bullying, he often moves on to the next distraction.
For example, he has loudly demanded that Tish James and James Comey should be thrown in jail. So far that's led to failure, with no sign it's going to change. And his invasion of US cities by the National Guard and ICE has not gone according to his maximalist plan, either. Neither has his tariff imbecility, or his attempts to influence foreign elections.
What the security strategy does reveal is that the higher reaches of the US government have been captured by pro-Russian fifth columnists. Patriots, plan and act accordingly.

All my female friends have had such experiences, and all of us have at one point or another walked home in the dark holding our keys in our hands. I even joined a karate club at university, in case the worst should happen, and through repeated drills learnt how to efficiently throw an opponent to the ground and hit the right pressure point to cause pain.
When unwanted sexual attention isn't immediately threatening, however, it is often shrugged off and ignored. But that doesn't mean it doesn't have a lasting psychological effect. Research now shows even everyday acts of sexism can have repercussions that stretch throughout people's bodies and lives.

Just completed my 21st event of the year as an art vendor, having moved here to Humboldt County in northern California eight months ago.
i’m deep tired.
But I’m proud that I did it. From shifting my career away from academia toward freelance art, I found a home that would encourage me and events where I could find my people. I started making work that was of interest to the people of my region, and learned a whole lot about what they wanted and needed.
These events have been exhausting and validating at the same time. I couldn’t have asked for a softer landing after choosing to relocate to a new home with no safety cushion, no acquaintances, and no orientation to the area. It was the most terrifying leap of faith I’d ever done. And it is slowly paying off—maybe not in money but in community networking and encouragement.
So I’m tired now. I’m going to pick up the pieces this next week and assess what comes next. Tonight, however, I am indulging in an adult beverage and a warm yummy comfort-food dinner or cheesy hamburger rice. And a good audiobook I’m enjoying.
Whew. Big time exhale.

For a long time, I have been getting legitimate emails from Comcast/Xfinity telling me that they tried to text me, but couldn't reach me, and would I please verify my mobile phone number.
I have my mobile service with Xfinity Mobile, and I do get texts from them.
It finally occurred to me to look up what number they use to originate SMS messages, which they wisely provide. I checked my blocked contacts list, and sure enough, 2 were blocked.
And of course, they send alerts from many different numbers, so I apparently have been getting some alerts, but not others.
Hopefully, that's fixed now, but if I added them to my blocklist, there's probably a good reason for that, like too many promotional texts on a channel that ought to only be used for legitimate customer account business.
We'll see if the emails stop and the texts are annoying.

The UN rights chief stressed that several provisions and practices under the 2020 National Security Law and the 2024 Safeguarding National Security Ordinance do not comply with international human rights law, particularly the principles of legality, necessity and proportionality governing permissible restrictions on rights.

Mexican president says Mexico will send more water to US but not immediately
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said Tuesday that her country intends to send more water to the United States, but not immediately, even as Donald Trump threatens to raise tariffs by 5% on Mexican imports if more water is not delivered as part of a water-sharing agreement.
Sheinbaum said Mexico is proposing a water delivery this month and another one in the coming years. The proposal will be discussed in a virtual meeting with U.S. officials Tuesday, she said.
Mexico is behind water deliveries to the United States from the Rio Grande River because of drought and pipeline limitations, Sheinbaum said.

When Jumaa and Fadi Abu Assi went to look for firewood their parents thought they would be safe. They were just young boys, aged nine and 10 and, after all, a ceasefire had been declared in Gaza.
Their mother, Hala Abu Assi, was making tea in the family’s tent in Khan Younis when she heard an explosion, a missile fired by an Israeli drone. She ran to the scene – but it was too late.
Since the US-brokered ceasefire was announced on 10 October, Israeli forces have killed more than 360 Palestinians in Gaza; according to a UN official, at least 70 are children – like Jumaa and Fadi.
They were killed, their mother said, at “a time when bloodshed was supposed to stop”.
