Vous vous interrogez sur l’élection de Trump, comme si c’était une aberration, un bug dans la matrice démocratique ? Détrompez-vous. Ce n’est pas un accident, c’est une réponse. Une réponse brutale, cynique, désespérée, à des décennies de promesses non tenues, de délocalisations massives, d’élites politiques et économiques qui ont préféré les discours lénifiants aux actes concrets. Les électeurs de Trump ne sont pas des naïfs. Ce sont des laissés-pour-compte qui, faute de mieux, ont choisi de voter pour un pyromane plutôt que de continuer à subir les incendies en silence.
Trump incarne ce que le système a produit de pire : un mélange de mépris assumé pour les institutions, de mensonges industriels, de racisme assumé et d’un narcissisme si décomplexé qu’il en devient presque rafraîchissant aux yeux de ceux qui en ont marre des hypocrisies polies. Il ne promet pas un monde meilleur. Il promet de tout casser. Et quand on vous a servi des miettes pendant quarante ans, voir quelqu’un balancer la table a quelque chose de cathartique.

Ne vous y trompez pas : nous ne sommes pas à l’abri. En France, en Europe, les mêmes ingrédients sont dans la marmite. La défiance envers les élites, la colère des territoires abandonnés, la tentation du "grand nettoyage" par le chaos. Le RN, les extrêmes de tous bords, les populistes qui surfent sur la peur et la nostalgie d’un passé fantasmé… Tous jouent la même partition, avec des nuances locales. La différence ? Aux États-Unis, le système a déjà vomi son démon. Chez nous, il est encore en gestation.
La question n’est pas "Comment en est-on arrivé là ?", mais "Quand est-ce que notre tour arrivera ?", à moins que nous ne décidions, enfin, de traiter les causes plutôt que les symptômes. Car une chose est sûre : quand les gens n’ont plus rien à perdre, ils votent pour ceux qui promettent de tout faire sauter. Même si, au final, ce sont toujours les mêmes qui ramassent les décombres.

simply dumping US debt on large scale can backfire. Flooding the market with US treasury and stocks means selling them for a discount, which can compound losses both for the US and for the EU (especially considering how still tightly connected our financial systems are). It’s the nuclear option with its mutually assured destruction.
It doesn’t mean however that we can’t get creative with more harmful actions 🙂
Private divestment: A lot of US debt in the EU is actually in private hands rather than governments or large banks (think of all those who invest into Silicon Valley stocks for example, all the banks that provide basic investment plans pegged against indexes composed mostly by US companies, all pension funds etc.). We as individuals actually have a lot of power. Private individuals who own US stocks or treasuries should sell them. It can trigger a cascade sell that may not be mutually harmful enough as the nuclear option, but still harmful enough to erode the US economy, push up American yields, deficit and inflation (and a country that needs to pay its compounding debts and manage eroding purchasing power at home is a country that can’t bite very hard outside of its borders). Plus, the American stocks and treasury markets look already a bit bubbly at the moment, they may just need a little nudge 🙂
Rating and ranking: Given the current political situation, EU rating agencies and market authorities may simply worsen the outlook for American financial products and/or increase their risk. Since banks and funds are usually bound not to have too many risky assets in their portfolios, it’s basically an indirect way to discourage investment into US products, or trigger sales of their inventory at least to the point where they meet the security thresholds.
Reinvest in the EU: The funds that are taken away from US financial products can be reinvested in EU indices. This can be the big push that Eurobonds have been waiting for decades. Instead of investing into Google and Apple, invest into Adyen, Zalando, Spotify, ASML etc. Instead of financing American debt, finance your own countries (preferably through instruments for common debt). And encourage the movement by temporarily reducing taxation on EU financial products while increasing the friction for the purchase of US treasuries and stocks.
