È legittimo cercare tutela contro l’odio antiebraico.

I live in a small town in Sweden. This morning I went out to my car (realising that I'd once again forgotten to lock the front door last night), drove along empty, wide roads to the nearest largeish town and parked in the brand new multistorey carpark by the railway station, where the first two hours' parking is free and the remainder of the time is very cheap.

I got out of the car without checking my surroundings, and as I leaned back in to get my bag out, I thought "In large parts of the world, I'd be asking to get mugged, or worse".

Then I walked along the clean, well-kept streets to the hospital, where I waited for less than 2 minutes for my mammography, which was completely free of charge.

This is Sweden. This is Europe. Why the FUCK are we trying to emulate, listening to, investing in or in any way having anything whatsoever to do with the utter insanity coming out of the USA?

And I don't just mean under the current, obviously barking, incumbent. I mean ever? They don't do things like we do. They don't believe in the same things that we do. This really is an us and a them situation, and we've been kidding ourselves for the last 80 years that they're like us.

Went for a walk today (in the UK) with someone in the party who normally lives in the USA.

"I'd be shot if I did this at home" they said as we set off across a field without worrying about where the footpath actually was.

in reply to Janeishly

@janeishly@beige.part Europeans have a particular history of industrialized, systematic mass violence, don’t they? Maybe not the Swedes, but the current resurgence of white supremacist trans-Atlanticism is, and has always been, about race and shared racial identity between white North Americans and Western Europeans, not just culture or “way of life” per se … also a penchant for violence. Ironically, this civilizational hysteria now includes Slavs, Jews and others. Ie both #Hungary and #Israel evoke their role as gatekeepers.

One of the upstream projects I maintain in #Debian is guile-gcrypt,
and I noticed there was a new upstream version in #Guix but I could not update my git repository, as the platform hosting it, notabug.org, seems to be going through some rough "404 page not found" times.

Because it is packaged in Guix, I knew there was a very good chance it was also archived on #SoftwareHeritage and sure enough, I was able to download and refresh my local git repository, and even verify the latest signed tag!

in reply to Vagrant Cascadian

It was not immediately obvious how to actually download something I could import into git properly... the various download options just unpacked the current checkout state.

After some searching, a post pointed to the "permalinks" floating side-tab thingy and in there was a "snapshot" icon to click on, which gives you an swh id, which you can then call out to curl ... and get a tarball ... which I could unpack and use as a local remote! or use with git bundle?

Many thanks #SoftwareHeritage !

People may know Andrew Millison as a leading instructor of permaculture. For quite some time now he’s been making videos documenting ecological restoration engaged in rural Africa, amongst other nations. The nature of these projects are sweat equity and hand tools to guide, water, flow, and sometimes so seeds or plant certain species. All of this with the primary aim of storing and recharging water in water basins. The results are nothing short of a miracle…

in reply to GhostOnTheHalfShell

In watching this, though, I’ve realized that the narrative that we i.e. the human race is nothing but a parasite or cancer on the planet is a narrative of capitalism and exploitation. They tell us our true nature is to kill and wipe out the land

The counter example are these projects. Anthropologist would tell you that humans are keystone species for most of our existence. We shaped the land to be the most fertile.

The problem here is that industrial agriculture (plantations) does the opposite

Review of "Automatic Noodle" (3 stars): On robots deciding to open a noodle restaurant and serve good food

A lovely, but too short, story of four robots who want to run a proper restaurant serving biang biang noodles in a future San Francisco, where California has declared independence from the rest of the US. They have to navigate a smart contract to gain ownership of the restaurant, learn how to make noodles, and survive a review bombing before it is over.

The story starts with the robots (with near human intelligence) waking up in a deserted restaurant to discover that they may soon be repossessed as the restaurant's franchise owner has closed. Considering their options, they decide to go their own way, and reopen the restaurant with food they want to serve to pay off their loans. But they have to navigate (and obfuscate) their way into ownership, for robots still cannot own property, and figure out how to serve food.

As first, it works, and their get high ratings. But then, trolls begin to review bomb them, lowering their ratings (and income). Investigating, they discover a group of robot haters and have to figure out how to fight back.

The story is set in a world where California is independent of the rest of the US, but not without a war that ended not long ago. Some of the robots in the restaurant fought in the war, and are recovering from the conflict. But while California may now have more freedoms, robot freedom isn't one of them, and there are still parts of the population that are wary of robots, especially those with near human intelligence.

The story ends with the restaurant on the way to success, but leaves dangling threads in the story, like how the robots ultimate navigate bureaucracy to really own the restaurant, and how the robots and humans will ultimately live together (or not). These might require another story (or two) to settle.
