Took my son to McDonald’s today after not going for years and was shocked at the price of a cheeseburger. So I looked it up and a cheeseburger went from $1 to $3 over the course of Biden’s presidency.

I can see why people voted for Trump since Democrats didn’t even acknowledge this problem.

Unfortunately for those voters, not only does he have no plan to lower prices, many of his policies are just going to make the problem worse.

in reply to Dare Obasanjo

There is also this rather interesting distinction between how Economist define inflation, which is a price change and how people defined it in their daily lives.

That definition is stuff we can’t afford anymore or stuff we have no hope of ever affording.

When there’s a spike that lifts prices by 10% or whatever and we just don’t go up with them, people are permanently underwater. Worse, the fan is sure to kill any hope of wage improvement. The Fed is out to kill prosperity.

in reply to Dare Obasanjo

This is cherry picking. Wherever you got those facts they give an incorrect conclusion.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics

"The BLS also found that prices in "limited-service restaurants" [fast food] increased by 47% since 2014."

So your McDonalds meal is likely at most 50% more than 2021.

That's an increase, and there was a lot of inflation coming out of Covid, but it is not 300% 2020 prices.

Since I never had the opportunity to have a goth teen girl phase, I think I've somehow wound up there permanently in my 50s.

I'm not sure what to do with this.

But I'll continue to be weird in your social media feed because it's cheaper than liquor and therapy.

@LordCaramac What if I told you that the hippie phase never ended for me and it's running in parallel with the newer goth elements? 🙃

Glad that TeenVogue is addressing this for their young readers.
"Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez explains how the ultra-rich are beneficiaries of an unjust economic system where billionaires don’t make money, they take money. It’s impossible to have that much money without profiting off of other people's lack of it." teenvogue.com/story/billionair…

I have talked about accessibility a lot here. But now, it's my turn to ask some questions! I fully admit to being guilty of not capitalising the first letter of each word when writing tags, unless said words are usually capitalised. As a screen reader user, I do realise this can lead to confusion. But are searches on Friendica and elsewhere in the Fediverse case sensitive? If I write goodwriting will it show up in the same listings as GoodWriting? If not, which should I follow, and what about single words, such as writing, which screen readers say correctly? Should I capitalise those (or not) for consistancy?

#accessibility #blind #Fediverse #Friendica #hashtags #screenreaders

in reply to Georgiana Brummell

I know that mastodon hashtags aren't case sensitive, so the capitalization variants all point to the same content. I would expect friendica to be the same, but I'm not sure.
in reply to Georgiana Brummell

hashtags should by convention be camel case, so the first word is not capitalised, while all the others are, so if your hashtag is just one word, it falls in the first word rule, which means it doesn't have to be capitalised. Because of this however, hashtag searches on the fediverse are case sensitive

(Toy) balls found in #Egypt, dating around 1,500 BC (18th dynasty). They are hollow and made of linen, with an elaborated red, blue and green decoration, formed by strips of reed. Balls like these were also used for rituals and acrobatic performances.

As I pointed out last week, the US owning TikTok would mean that it would be restricted from removing or moderating any content inconsistent with the First Amendment. That would be a disaster.

A nighttime street scene, brightly lit by numerous streetlights, shows a curved roadway with a low concrete wall and seating area to the left. The seating has some graffiti. A silver car is visible in the background, parked near a stone monument. Trees line the street, and power lines stretch across the scene. The buildings in the distance are softly lit.

As a grammar prescriptivist, I take writing and proper use of words very seriously. I recently saw a post about ending text messages with full stops. Apparently, some think this is a bad idea. No. It's called using punctuation correctly! Perhaps, they should read a few grammars instead of playing their silly video games! The same is true of netspeak, textspeak, corporate spaek, and abbreviating everything. Likewise, I have no use for political correctness. I refuse to use words such as visually-challenged, vertically-challenged, etc. I will say blind (or visually impaired if the person has some vision), short, fat, etc. Unless I'm writing poetry and am seeking flowery words for things, I call them what they are. I also have no time for so-called gender-neutral words, unless they honestly make sense and are actually descriptive, such as firefighter or police officer. But I'm just as likely to say fireman, policeman, waiter, steward, actor, chairman, etc. and change the gender when necessary. I also refuse to use the singular they. There are two sexes (gender is for grammar). You're either one or the other. This absolutely doesn't mean that you can't change your sex. If, for example, I meet you as a woman and you change to a man or are a drag king/queen, I will certainly change my use of pronouns when discussing you or talking about you, either permenantly or temporarily, as the case requires. But unless you literally have multiple personalities or are a machine or an inanimate object, you are neither a they nor an it, and you're certainly not some made-up pronoun such as xe. I would never cause harm to those who use such words. I would just consider them to be silly or confused.

Linda Duval doesn't like this.

in reply to Linda Duval

@lindaduval @lindaduval My sincere apologies. I always try to be gentle with non-native speakers. I must say, other than that tiny mistake, you write so well that I would never have guessed that English wasn't your first language! I am equal whether I subscribe to all of that or not. I don't need to be radical or to change the language in order to love myself, or to strive for the best, or to demand to be treated equally. I simply need to be, and I am.
in reply to Georgiana Brummell

Your preferences are yours and you choose what you prefer. However, we live in a society where it is important to be aware where language can be detrimental to women.

The difference can be simply felt in how much you get paid compare to a man in the same role. Please search "gender pay gap" and you will find that in the legal industry, for example, men can earn as much as 59% more than a women in the same role.

Why is it that people I know who decide to jump into #Linux for the first time go for Garuda? I mean, there's nothing wrong with it per-se, but it's also not an incredibly user friendly distro for first timers. Vim should not be a default, it should be an opt into, for example. Flatpacks should not be pushed over native packages, and yet they are (and then they cause issues as a result!)

Just... ugh.
