While I’ve always had outlets outside of work, I’ve also attained an enormous amount of fulfillment from the work I’ve done, and I find the subject matter of this story completely alien. abc.net.au/news/2025-05-12/the…

Having said that, as I get older and closer to retirement, my fulfilment needs have been shifting. I’m now less concerned with my own achievements, but get a lot more reward out of leading achievements in others.

One of my proudest things from the last five or six years is looking back on relatively junior colleagues who have picked up elements of the programs of work I’ve been pursuing, and expanded their own remit and influence by succeeding. It’s massively helped my work (thank you, everyone, I appreciate it more than you’ll ever understand) but it’s also given me a frisson of excitement to know that I’ve been able to visibly help their careers.

I figure I have about a decade left until I retire, and I’d like to spend it instilling more of that. A bit of a developmental legacy. I’ve hit my heights, plenty of others will hit theirs if I can help them with a bit of a boost.
