An update posted yesterday to Liz Cullinane's GoFundMe appeal for my wife and me:

"Last night, Given suffered an episode of atrial fibrillation. It was her third in the last four months. She spent New Years Eve in a public hospital in the nearby town of Ejido as she did in February, a week after Valentine's Day.

"Given has suffered a chronic form of the condition for nearly a decade. Aggressive episodes used to occur every six months, each requiring hospitalisation and cardioversion (a procedure in which the heart is stopped and restarted under anaesthetic). She underwent a laser ablation of the heart in Berlin but an error in the procedure put her in intensive care for ten days. A change of medication following another episode in England felt promising when, for the first time, her heart got through eighteen months without the slightest flutter.

"Until this year.

"It is clear that Given needs much better specialist care than she receives as a transient patient in different emergency words across Europe. She has had to bear the costs of these visits as a private patient (our prescription medications already cost about €uro 300 a month, depending on where we are) and although it has been a financial strain, it is a mere fraction of what we would have had to spend in the USA, even if we were fortunate enough to be insured.

"This latest episode underscores the urgency of our quest to settle somewhere and through a temporary residence, gain access to a national health care system and the regular care of competent physicians and specialists. Not to put too fine a point on it, our lives depend on it.

"We had planned to sail eastwards to Italy as soon as we re-launch the boat. But we are now considering an interim plan to fly to Rome, where we could stay with friends and where, also, we know excellent specialists who are willing to review both Given’s and my health and organise essential tests with an understanding of our limited finances. Some hospital services would be covered by a reciprocal healthcare agreement Australia has with Italy.

"We could leave Wrack ashore here in Almerimar and maybe even put her up for sale, the proceeds of which could help us rent somewhere. But old boats sell exceedingly slowly and in the meantime we would be adrift and shelterless. There is still no certainty that we will be granted residency anywhere — and thus be allowed to work and support ourselves, however modestly — even though we are optimistic. That said, a month or two anywhere would allow me to finish (finally) my long-promised book for the Dutch publisher, Thomas Rap.

"It is a desperate, complicated situation for which there are no simple solutions. Neither Given nor I have homes to which we can return. The help of this community has enabled us to survive 'in the wild' for a few years now but with the world the way it is, these days, we know that all of you are being confronted by the need to harbour your resources.

"This weekend, a dear friend had to lend us money so we could get groceries. We haven’t eaten much in order to invest in ensuring Wrack's seaworthiness. I spent today sitting with Given, whose heartbeat is still erratic, keeping her calm, staring at a heart monitor, and listening to the depth of her every breath as she rests.

"I wish this was a more positive update, especially as we have almost completed Wrack's maintenance and repair, thanks to you all and the community Liz Cullinane has created for us here. Given and I long for a different, more hopeful, less fear-filled narrative of our lives. Nonetheless, we are grateful for everything you have given us.

"Thank you."

Given had a significant set-back this afternoon when her 'low-level' tachycardia became something else and she collapsed in my arms, her body suffused suddenly by a gelid sweat. A young cardiologist intervened quickly to decellerate her heart rate as a crash team shooed me away.

Two hours later, her heart rate was steady, her blood pressure normal.

A new issue affecting her heart has been identified, although we need an English-speaking cardiologist to clarify for us what it is and how we should deal with it.

More necessary or more perilous? Experts on the case for a European supergrid after the Iberian blackout.

In an attempt to significantly ramp up its energy independence, the EU has revealed that it will be adding a further 89 gigawatts of renewable energy capacity in 2025.

With widespread power failures and intensifying climate change, could it be time to revisit the dream of a European supergrid?

Reporting the news in conflict zones is always dangerous. And Palestinian journalists are often victims caught up in the battle for survival. Media workers face growing violence in the occupied West Bank, while in Gaza, almost certain death.

The older I get and the more I explore the different national and societal strategies adopted by other nations vs Canada, the more I believe Canada - though far from perfect - is overall the best country in the world. Our general approach seems to work.
