Perth in Westaustralia, Sydney in New South Wales und Brisbane in Queensland.

Android phones have changed a lot over the years, and with those changes come new privacy and security features that are easy to miss. Here’s a rundown on the most important settings. ssd.eff.org/module/how-to-get-…

This article has very inaccurate information about GrapheneOS. GrapheneOS substantially improves both privacy and security. It has far more review than OEM Android forks. This draws a false equivalence between GrapheneOS and CalyxOS/LineageOS which do roll back security vs. AOSP.
in reply to GrapheneOS

The stock OS on most Android devices doesn't come from Google but rather is a fork of the Android Open Source Project from the OEM. Most OEMs license Google Mobile Services which is integrated with highly privileged access. The core operating system comes from the device's OEM.
in reply to GrapheneOS

The term "custom ROM" is also both inaccurate on a technical level and highly misleading. GrapheneOS is an operating system based on the Android Open Source Project just like OEM Android forks. We don't want it referred to as a "custom ROM" which leads to major misconceptions.
in reply to GrapheneOS

@GrapheneOS I've never understood why the term Android distributions is not used, just like GNU/Linux distros.
in reply to GrapheneOS

@GrapheneOS The article just says EFF can't vouch for any of these. I love your work, but your online PR is... combative. Chill
in reply to ambiguous0

@ambiguous0 It is you who is leaving a hostile and combative reply to a correction which was appropriate.

Here's a direct quote of the content in the article:

> Custom ROMS also introduce new risks, as these distributions are not vetted in the same ways and with the same amount of resources as Google puts into Android. Because of this, we only recommend using custom ROMs if you have a deep understanding of these potential threats.

In context, this is directly referring to GrapheneOS too.

in reply to GrapheneOS

@ambiguous0 Android on most devices is an OS from the device's OEM, not Google.

Non-Pixel Android devices with the stock OS are at best on a fork of the initial release of Android 15 from September/October with partial security backports. That's not current Android and doesn't have full privacy and security which require being on the latest stable release.

In what sense is an outdated OEM fork of Android safer or more heavily vetted than GrapheneOS? The article has harmful misinformation.

in reply to GrapheneOS

@GrapheneOS I agree with them. I took a very long (months) look at GrapheneOS before I took the leap. We may not trust Google, but likewise there should be no implicit trust for anyone. It seems you're seeking an endorsement.
in reply to ambiguous0

@ambiguous0 No, what we're expecting is that they avoid making objectively false statements. The operating system on most Android devices is not a Google OS but rather a fork of an old version of Android by the OEM. You're replying here based on that same premise which is inaccurate. The claim that GrapheneOS is not as vetted as those OEM forks and the implication that it doesn't provide the standard security features or use hardware-based security features is wrong. The section is harmful.
in reply to GrapheneOS

We've improved how we direct connections to GrapheneOS servers by using anycast to fill in missing GeoIP data. This should reduce service latency and improve download bandwidth for many users in the western US and especially with certain VPN providers.

github.com/GrapheneOS/ns1.grap…

in reply to GrapheneOS

I agree on clarifying that GrapheneOS is an OS and not just a custom ROM but the paragraph is not referring to Graphene. It may not be explicit but it refers to third party ROMs in general. The paragraph that follows clearly distinguishes vetted security focused "custom ROMs". TBH I also thought GrapheneOS is a custom ROM and it must be an honest mistake from the part of the writer.

in reply to abhijith

@abhijith @ambiguous0 That's not the main issue. The main issue is incorrectly describing the OS on most Android devices as being from Google and claiming that those OEM forks of Android are more vetted than GrapheneOS. That's objectively false. GrapheneOS is heavily vetted and battle tested against sophisticated adversaries. It stands up to those attacks far better than the OEM Android forks being presented as secure. The article implies that GrapheneOS is less secure, which is backwards.
in reply to GrapheneOS

@abhijith @ambiguous0 GrapheneOS is in a much different space from other alternate AOSP-based operating systems. Those other operating systems are a substantial security downgrade from AOSP or the stock Pixel OS while GrapheneOS is a massive upgrade.

LineageOS doesn't even claim to be privacy or security focused and DivestOS is discontinued.

We have a massive issue with how GrapheneOS is being misrepresented there and we would greatly prefer if the problematic section was removed.

in reply to GrapheneOS

@abhijith @ambiguous0 It's wrong to group it with insecure alternate operating systems and portray it as if they're in the same space. It's also wrong to portray it as less vetted or less secure than an OEM fork of Android. It's the complete opposite. GrapheneOS is far more reviewed and vetted than proprietary, outdated OEM forks of Android.

GrapheneOS successfully stands up to real world attacks while OEM Android forks make things worse. discuss.grapheneos.org/d/14344… is a real world example.

in reply to ambiguous0

To be honest, what I get from that article is indeed an advice to not use any of the listed solutions, and that includes Graphene OS.

I don't want to step on anyone's toes here, but there the question is kind of obvious: what does it take for the EFF to endorse an Android system?

in reply to matlag

@matlag @ambiguous0 The article does make an endorsement for using the stock OS across devices. They wrongly believe that's a widely vetted OS which comes from Google. Outside Pixels, the stock OS on devices is an outdated fork of Android by the OEM and is usually specific to a single device model or group of device models. Each of those OEMs has many forks of Android rather than one. How exactly are these closed source forks of outdated Android versions by each Android OEM being vetted?
in reply to GrapheneOS

I get your point: they'e not. Not by Google, and most likely not by any independent third party.
in reply to matlag

@matlag @ambiguous0 Google's certification process only involves hiring a third party to run test suites. They don't review / audit the code in any way. Many OEMs are clearly cheating at the certification process since they have a bunch of test failures for important things. There are devices launched with blatantly broken functionality including missing or broken security features despite it being found by the test suite they supposedly passed for certification. That's hardly vetting it.
in reply to Electronic Frontier Foundation

Why is DivestOS, which is discontinued, included in this list? DivestOS will be behind on security updates and only get worse with time

It's existential. What time is it (what year was it) and what's the weather like are no longer the banal questions they once were. This is fascism.

Two things!

1st: New track #release: "Goin' Mirlo".
- mirlo.space/die-nmi/release/va…
Why is that?

2nd: Because I moved most of my stuff away from #Soundcloud today. This company is now feeding my work to unspecified AI companies, and no. I am sick of doing free creative commons for company suckers. I do music for humans. Not for AI. So good bye, soundcloud.

What remains there is an #antifa track (can't be wrong to train AIs to be anti fascist), an old noisy track of mine from 1989, and this one. To cut deeply into their flesh or so 😀

I can only recommend to do that to other musicians as well, as long as you don't want to have strange AI clones of your music around (but without your spirit) and other people making money out of it.

If you move away, try to stay away from shady dark patterns infested "upload your music" services.

Personally I've decided to move from Soundcloud to #Mirlo Space (hence the title) - here are those guys: @mirlo@musician.social . I've watched them for almost a year trying to enable something different, something cooperative style for and together with musicians and not for some companies sake. Trust takes time, and I think I can trust the Mirlo gang now ;) .

You still have other options in case you wanna move away from Soundcloud – a complete other model would be i.E. self hosting your #music with something as cool as #faircamp . Just don't stumble into the fangs of the next musicians spirits sucking company, doing this not for your benefit but for their shareholders. That won't go well. Never unfortunately.
