in reply to Yogthos • • •Shanghai has had maglev to/from Pudong airport and the city center for a long, long time. It's kind of a gimmick. Only foreigners really utilize it. It's inconvenient compared to the metro because it doesn't have frequent trains and only goes into the city center thereby still requiring line changes onto the metro to continue on thereafter. Depending on where you're going it could be more useful, assuming there is a train coming in quickly by the time you arrive. Otherwise, faster to just jump on the metro.
I guess I could see maglev between cities like Shanghai and Beijing being useful. Express trains between two specific points like that. But, it would only really be useful if there was an abundance of trains available. Otherwise, it runs into the same problem that affects the airport maglev in Shanghai. E.g.: if the airport maglev only takes me 15 minutes to get into the city center, but I have to wait 30 minutes for it to arrive (45 minutes), and I have to take a line interchange that adds 20 minutes to get to where I need to go (105 minutes) then it's not so useful compared to just taking line 2 which takes about 60 minutes and I can depart immediately.
A maglev to/from Beijing and Shanghai would need regular service: doesn't matter if it takes only 1.5 hours (realistically it would probably be more like 2 hours) if you have to wait 5--6 hours between trains, it only departs/arrives at specific stations, and the HSR would otherwise just take 6 hours altogether, have multiple trains/times to choose from, and service from your local station.
Great to see this technology being advanced, though! Maybe one day we will see widespread maglev around China as we do HSR contemporaneously. All the HSR would be viewed like the slow "green snake" or "green skin" non-HSR trains that still operate.
