I admit, I read this and spent an amused 5 minutes thinking about all the ways Maths might threaten dictators and their stooges.who are against Academic Freedom: "leave him, he can do trigonometry!", or "woah this guy is unpacking partial differential equations, run".
But honestly, it's basically the concept that anyone might be set free (at least mentally) by being able to join the Maths commit without interference that's the issue isn't it?
It's absurd that we have come to this state, but I'm very glad @EuroMathSoc have nailed their colours to the mast in this way.

If the Govt wants to close the skill gap then it needs to invest in training, resources and recruitment.
At the end of the 70's we had something called TOPS (Training Opportunities Scheme) Courses which gave very short but intense training. It's how I got into computing after most of the decade on the dole.
It wasn't just bricklaying and trades (which is fine) it included Technology like my IBM 370 PL/1 course.
