The image features two illustrations related to physics, set against a light beige background. At the top center, the word "Physics" is displayed in a white oval with a blue border.

On the left, a blue figure is kneeling beside a red figure lying on the ground. The blue figure appears to be in discomfort, indicated by a zigzag line above their head, suggesting pain or strain. The red figure is positioned horizontally, with the blue figure's hands on the red figure's back.

On the right, two blue figures are standing and pulling on a red figure, which is positioned vertically. An upward-pointing red arrow is present, indicating the direction of the force applied by the blue figures. The red figure is centered between the two blue figures, with their hands gripping the red figure's shoulders.

The illustrations are simple and use a limited color palette, primarily blue, red, and beige, with minimal detail to convey the concepts of force and support.

And if you’re unaware of what Black Mesa is, it is a modern remake of the original Half-Life. It has a 95% positive too.

I don’t think this supposed imminent total capture of all labor is actually true. But understanding that people β€’believeβ€’ it’s true β€” that the entirety of labor is about to be replaced by Mr. Data β€” is key to understanding this horrifying incarnation of investor capitalism in which we’re currently living.

For Silicon Valley, AI isn’t just about replacing some jobs. It’s about replacing all of them

"...I recently found myself at a dinner in an upstairs room at a restaurant in San Francisco hosted by a venture capital firm. The after-dinner speaker was a tech veteran who, having sold his AI company for hundreds of millions of dollars, has now turned his hand to investing. He had a simple message for the assembled startup founders: the money you can make in AI isn’t limited to the paltry market sizes of previous technology waves. You can replace the world’s workers – which means you can capture their salaries. All of them...."

Wealth for businesses doesn’t come from customers anymore; it comes from investors. That’s what extreme wealth inequality does. And risk-tolerant investors are all vibes. So basically a business owner’s ability to get rich depends entirely on just how much bullshit they can get a few billionaires to believe.

Of course! But profit just means you get out before the suckers, not that the company you’re investing in is ever profitable.

I'm working on a fourth part in my series about open social web / fediverse business models. This one's from the perspective of funders: what would I do if I was *funding* the open social web?

Which leads me to this question: how do *you* think the open social web should be funded?

I can only talk for Mastodon, but IMO 51% or more by direct user donations, then big donations/grants/commercial services
in reply to Ben Werdmuller

Not sure this answers the question, but some form of integration of a voluntary donation mechanism into the platform sign up process and/or an integrated 'donate' button would help a lot.

U.S. Secretary of Commerce says the β€˜new model’ is factory jobs for lifeβ€”for you, your kids, and your grandkids

So slavery as indentured servitude is the American future. Way to "new model" the old model.

The USSR didn't have any limits to choosing an employment since shortly after WW2, what are you talking about? By the late 70s, around 10% of positions in the economy were vacant and there was full employment, and people weren't forced to work anywhere. The average unemployment duration was 15 days.

Please, what's your source on your claim?

in reply to AES_Enjoyer

Come on man it took one google search to read about the centralized labour programs, liquidation of foreign ethnic groups, and militarization of labour. This isn’t even counting the estimated 10 million or so people in forced labour gulags.
in reply to AES_Enjoyer

The USSR didn’t have any limits to choosing an employment

You were distributed to a place by the state after finishing your education. If you left that place too soon, you'd be frowned upon and that'd be mirrored in your labor book (USSR had such a document, basically a dossier documenting your whole history of employment with characteristics, you could get such a "flattering" characteristic by a superior not liking you that you'd never be accepted to a good place after, and you couldn't refuse or lose a record in your labor book).

and people weren’t forced to work anywhere.

Being unemployed for too long was literally, seriously, illegal in the USSR. Google for "тунСядство".

People with something really bad in their labor books (say, dissidents) or some other necessary documents (being German after the war, being Jewish in a wrong period of time) had problems finding a place that would accept them, and would sometimes be prosecuted for being unemployed (that was usually informal employment, because you still had to eat something).

But in general yes, some kind of employment was always possible. Dying from hunger or being homeless was almost ruled out. Most of the population lived in some sort of "acceptable poverty" - conditions very bad by US measure, but with the previous correction. That's sort of one good thing that most people from ex-USSR agree on.

in reply to AES_Enjoyer

So if I wanted to change jobs or quit a job to go into higher education, do you know if that was possible, how hard was it to do? Because available positions does not equal job mobility, as you need permission from the factory manager and the state and those are harder to get when qualified workers are scarce.

#MiteMonday: this weekend I got out to my sumo mite (_Allothrombium_) tree to catch some wrestling bouts!

It is some kind of sexual competition thing: certain males seem to stake out a little patch and aggressively defend it against all comers. The females, I think, are the larger ones who take little notice of the fights and mostly wedge themselves into crevices in bark? Courtship rituals seem to involve leg-tapping and walking around each other in circles. I am wildly curious about what's actually going on.

The scale wasn't too unkind tonight...
Arwen wanted a short walkies, so we did just that. But... Shorter walkies means less steps and exercise for me as well.
So I do need to get something done.
I was thinking of the treadmill, but my right leg is annoying me some. So, I'm thinking it will be safer to go back upstairs and ride the bike a bit. 😊

My whole body is sore from the stress and anxiety of all that happened last Sunday. :parrot_sad: which is understandable, but also annoying. It's draining my spoons, causing more pain and heart palpitations. As I still have moments where the adrenaline is rushing through me when my brain does some sort of flashback... πŸ˜”

It will take time. And I can't imagine how it must be for my parents, as they were in the crash, and they have to deal with the insecurity of the bikers health, needing a new car somehow, and recovering from the bruises and huge shock... :moomin_sad:

But I need to keep caring for myself. I need to be in a decent shape for my surgery in 31 days. I need to be good enough to support my parents... So... Let's get my ass off the couch and head back upstairs for a bike ride. πŸ’ͺ🏼

Finally pulling the plug on Adobe. Long overdue. I was hanging on for no good reason. Plenty of #FOSS tools that replace them, many I prefer at this point.

One less reason to keep a Windows VM around too.

I had enough of losing at Go, so I decided to brush off my #badukProgramming project and see if I can't beat my own bot.

I had forgotten I never made an "end state" for this engine.

Also my bot is just. . .randomly passing its turn. I forget what the scoring function I used was.

in reply to b4ux1t3 #1️⃣

Ohhhhh

It's not taking moves with a "score" of 0.

I still don't know what the scoring function it's using is. This code is atrocious

in reply to b4ux1t3 #1️⃣

I wish I had any idea at all how to make a bot for Go.

Maybe I should start a new one and not have it be a gimmick, but actually try to figure out what might make a good scoring function.

And before anyone says it, _yes I know_, the play space of Go is waaaaaaaaay too big for a traditional minimax algorithm to be worthwhile, you _need_ to have a neural network or else there's not even a chance at beating even weak players.

I get it.

I'm a very weak player.

in reply to b4ux1t3 #1️⃣

I also wish I could just, like, get paid to write bots for abstract strategy games all day.

Is that a job? Can someone pay me to do that?
