Yesterday I visited the UNESCO site “Gamzigrad-Romuliana, Palace of Galerius”. It is near the settlement of Gamzigrad in Serbia, near the border with Bulgaria. Felix Romuliana is an imperial Roman palace, they only figured out its name in 1984.
It was built on the site of a previous fort around 300, and only went about 150 years before being plundered by the Huns.
The towers and walls seem to have been reconstructed from debris in modern times, as far as I could tell from the info at the site.
In the unlikely chance anyone decides to go see this site, it is absolutely in the “rent a car” mode of travel, not public transit. But my license is expired, and I have some free time, so the basic route is to fly into Belgrade and take the train to Niš, or fly into Niš, then take a three hour train to Zaječar. Which has some quite scenic parts as it runs up a steep canyon.
From Zaječar there is no transit to the site. I asked my hotel contact if he knew a taxi that used WhatsApp (locals use…
Viber, which won’t accept my phone number). Instead he booked me a taxi to the site which left me stranded there. I ended up standing under a tree outside for most of an hour hoping that someone else would come in a taxi, but ended up finding a taxi co. that could answer the phone in English through Google Voice for 33¢/min. That saved me the 2.5 hour walk back, which was fortunate because I hadn’t put on sun block and my Achilles tendon was already griping all day.
