But on the fediverse, hashtags are what we use for discovery instead of serendipity generators ("The Algorithms"). Along with community timelines, and now keyword searches, they are ways to browse the pool of posts your server has from everyone someone follows.
You can "hashtag stuff" a post in a non-twattish way as long as you donate brain cells when considering which ones to add.
The crime is when people just add tags to try to game the system or garner unearned attention. They create the collective action problem.
