As somebody else pointed out though I misread the tide table. The tide seems to have been coming on, which could mean a strong current in the direction up river.
@drwho right! Seems like the tow line broke? The tug seems to be rushing to try and stop it from drifting.
What I don't get is *why* is it drifting that way. If I read the tides info correctly, this was ~2h after high tide, so unless there are some very weird currents there, it should have been drifting downriver: tidetime.org/north-america/uni…

Yes, the ship's masts are taller than the clearance under that bridge. Great sleuthing. But as noted in the parent toot:
1. the ship seems to have been going up river, which makes no sense in the context of it leaving NYC;
2. the ship seems to have been going backwards at the time.
I am going to bet this ship was not trying to go under that bridge at all.
