🔴 NEW: Scottish universities have accepted millions of pounds from Chinese organisations with alleged links to the military, human rights abuses and spying.

Our investigation: theferret.scot/scottish-univer…

in reply to The Ferret

Some universities accepted money from companies and institutions with ties to the People’s Liberation Army in China, including those which are sanctioned by other countries.

Other universities took funding from institutions and tech firms accused of helping the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) spy on and target users, spread misinformation and abuse human rights.

in reply to The Ferret

The director-general of MI5 last year warned vice-chancellors that China and other states the UK Government views as adversaries are attempting to steal technology from universities that can “deliver their authoritarian, military and commercial priorities”.

The Inter-Parliamentary Alliance on China said The Ferret’s research suggests that funding from CCP-linked organisations in Scottish higher education is particularly prevalent.

in reply to The Ferret

However the Chinese Embassy in London has accused critics and media outlets of “politicising and stigmatising normal educational exchanges between the two countries”. It has denied the use of subversive tactics abroad and argues that research collaboration with UK universities has “enhanced mutual understanding”.

given the complete cluster caused by the US and UK governments and the countries to which they contribute money, I would have thought that China is one of the least worst options nowadays.

Bill Gates and Linus Torvalds meet for the first time.

I had the thrill of a lifetime, hosting dinner for Bill Gates, Linus Torvalds and David Cutler. Linus had never met Bill, and Dave had never met Linus. No major kernel decisions were made, but maybe next dinner 😉

Love this! ❤️

Prince of Wales plays with family dog and her new puppies in picture marking 43rd birthday! 😍

(Just a reminder that the Royals preside over a country with record numbers of homelessness. Every year ninety thousand people in the UK die in poverty. Of those deaths, 436 in 2022 involved malnutrition (or starvation).

They could completely eradicate homelessness in the UK 36 times over and still have nearly a billion pounds left over. X)

Had to run a (driving) errand this weekend, which is unusual for me, but I did get to try out the new DIY bicycle jersey bag I sewed shopping. Works great!

An evening session just before sunset. The temperature was 22°C when I started and there was a pleasant wind under a cloudy sky.

Still the heat of the previous days stressed my body and I didn't have the strength to push the pace faster. I have also walked a lot lately, so there's that too.

It was a good run anyway!

The #boatoftheday is called Ichtus. Not a dreamy name if you ask me!

When I woke up yesterday after my run I had sore muscles and stiff joints all over my lower body.
A bit concerning was the inflammation on my right Achilles tendon.

This morning the soreness and joints stiffness disappeared, however the Achilles tendon is still bothering me. Less than yesterday, but I'm wondering if I should attempt my scheduled run tomorrow or wait another few days.

Curious that I feel the stretch on the tendon less if I land on midfoot compared to forefoot.

Get well before amputation is needed ;)

I know I'm bad at it, but when I remember to drink, get salts (and a few other minerals) and do my stretching afterwards. The less stiffness I endure.

in reply to woollypigs

@woollypigs I think this happened because I reduced my warm-up & mobility routines due to heat laziness.
I shouldn't have.

So are you suggesting to see how I may fell tomorrow or wait a few days regardless of how I feel?

I know Achilles tendon can lead to a serious injury if overlooked. Not so sure about how long I should wait though.

oh for what it is worth. The lass has pulled something in her leg above the knee, we think hamstrings or a muscle near. Talked to a physio, over the phone, who said to rest, potter about, gentle stretches, when gentle walking doesn't hurt any more, re-start running with a couch to 5k first. Which is a bugger as she just finished the the Cto5k ...
in reply to woollypigs

@woollypigs ouch hamstring strain must be very painful! And difficult to handle too 😧.
She can probably complete a different 5k program, just to vary a bit from what she's been doing so far.
in reply to s1m0n4

yes that's the plan, rest while looking at mountains instead of hiking or running around in the, then back to running
in reply to s1m0n4

I'm from camp 'better safe than sorry' but when it's about running not very good at practicing what I preach 🫣. Hence my practice run yesterday. Today I think it was still to enthousiastic however much I tried to take it easy. So I'm sticking to walking with short jogging intervals for a little longer. And cycling and core training.
in reply to Johan

@JvdB well, you've spent several weeks without running so that's perfectly understandable.
I'll take a few days off too. This evening I'm trying an aqua gym class.
in reply to s1m0n4

aqua gym is said to be very good for cardio/general strength and at the same time less damaging for joints, bones and tendons. So that is a good choice! I'll look around for aquatic options in my town.

I love horses. I ride horses. Usually on the prairie, where I can just give them their head and let them run their fool head off if they want, or just stand there and eat cactus pears and toot. Whatever. 😀 You don't see things like dressage schools or racehorse farms around ranches.

So I was appalled when I saw dressage practices and training modalities, and was equally appalled when I toured a racing facility.

Neither sport should be allowed. They are cruel, horrible sports.

In times of stress I like thinking about ginkgo trees and looking at their leaves. I have so many trinkets with them as a motif because of how weird and pretty they are, and how very very long they've survived as a living fossil of sorts.
