While we are looking at Iran/Israel/Gaza, Putin continues with his demolishing of Ukraine. Let's hope leaders at the NATO summit also discuss about how to counter Russia and prevent these kind of attacks. We defend Israel with allied forces why not Ukraine?

@davidallengreen argues persuasively that we should celebrate the two votes in the House of Commons on abortion & assisted dying as they both indicate meaningful resistance to the illiberalism of the criminal laws's invasion of our private lives.

In both cases the work is not competed (they need to navigate the House of Lords before becoming law), but I think DAG is right to draw some positive value from these developments.

Illiberalism is not inevitable!

in reply to Emeritus Prof Christopher May

Whilst these votes are welcome signs I feel obligated to caution that, just as Trump ignores Congress, the courts and the constitution as and where it suits him, we are already seeing forces of illiberalism simply ignoring laws made by Parliament by constructing false narratives about what those laws say and mean and by placing their preferred people in the press and in positions of power and responsibility to cement and carry through their false logic.
in reply to Christine Burns MBE 🏳️‍⚧️📚⧖

So far I see few signs of ‘the good guys’ really engaging minds on how to deal with wanton lies created in service of getting around genuine evidence led policy and decision making. I speak naturally from the viewpoint of an observer in a minority where these techniques have been developed and refined. From our point of view the rest of you are next unless this kind of cynical manipulation is somehow tackled and wrestled to the ground. Trust depends on it.
in reply to Christine Burns MBE 🏳️‍⚧️📚⧖

@christineburns
Yes, a warning well heard & I'm not sure DAG would differ.... if & when the laws do pass, then the ground on which the illiberals can be fought at least is a little more solid
in reply to Christine Burns MBE 🏳️‍⚧️📚⧖

@christineburns
Whats the first headline I see about assisted dying not related to its passing through Parliament?

"No budget for assisted dying service, Streeting says"

2nd Paragraph

"Streeting, who was one of the most senior opponents of the legislation, posted a lengthy message on his Facebook page explaining why he voted against the legislation."

in reply to Emeritus Prof Christopher May

They're also a very good example of how there are many MPs who - when not cowed by the party whip or overly concerned with ambition - are actually reasonable people who want to do what they believe to be the right thing for their constituents.

Unfortunately, they're also a very good example of how Parliamentary schedules need to be reformed, and how 'but we've always done it this way' really isn't an appropriate reason for giving such limited time to incredibly important and complex decisions.

(Having an already very limited time for abortion debate reduced further in order to hold a vote on penalties for fly tipping - a vote that was certain to end in defeat for the amendment - is clearly not serving the country's interests. And that's not to say fly tipping is unimportant. Of course fly tipping matters. But, you know, bit of common sense, bit of proportion wouldn't go amiss.)

in reply to RolloTreadway

Another thing I'd like to add, having thought about this:

It is a very good thing that we have this convention of ethical decisions being removed from the party whips. Many countries do not have that. Many countries make such issues explicitly a matter of party policy.

We should recognise that this is a rare and noble thing, and should fight to retain it.

Hmm, that “necessary” is doing a lot of work.

While I’m uncomfortable with tools that accept malformed XML, I’m categorically against tools that emit it. Nobody should use such tools for anything.

The image displays a vibrant and colorful depiction of the Helix Nebula, captured by the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope (CFHT). The nebula is characterized by its bright green and pink hues, with a central white region, set against a backdrop of numerous stars. The text at the bottom of the image provides information about the Helix Nebula, including its designation as NGC 7293, its location in the constellation Aquarius, and its distance of approximately 700 light-years from Earth. The image credit is given to CFHT, Coelum, MegaCam, J.-C. Cuillandre, and G. A. Anselmi. The explanation section discusses the nebula's formation as a planetary nebula, resulting from the end of a Sun-like star's life, and how the central star's energy causes the expelled gas to fluoresce. The image also mentions that the picture was taken with the CFHT located atop a dormant volcano in Hawaii, USA. Additionally, the image includes a reference to "Free APOD Lectures" scheduled for January 5 in NYC and January 9.

Iran was using many decoys to deceive the Israeli defense system.
It is no longer necessary to use so many, because they have already learned how it operates.

In a war, each side has a learning curve about the enemy's combat methods and defenses. Attacks become more economical in terms of materials to achieve the same effect.

we have got to stop talking about open source software this way man. someone who published work with an explicit label on it saying "this comes with absolutely no warranty" and is not being compensated is not part of a "supply chain" abyssdomain.expert/@filippo/11…

Amongst other things, there's an open source software supply chain story here.

This Android library with 174 stars and one maintainer has taken down Monday.com, Eventbrite (!!!), UPS, Kraken, Lowe's, YBS, IKEA, Agibank, iFood, PagBank, pago.ro, and Udemy.

Again, this is the same failure mode that caused outages in 2023.

in reply to jcoglan

years of insisting that volunteers owe things to huge companies that aren't paying them has, empirically, not worked out, you need to try a second idea
in reply to jcoglan

gee, trying new ideas for open source maintenance sustainability, I should consider trying that
in reply to Filippo Valsorda

@filippo I think there are more important things than word choice but I am coming around to the idea that the word choice *is* bad. To model this as a “supply chain” issue implies we need to hold suppliers to account and put resources into the delivery mechanism. But that is the opposite of what needs to happen. This should be an embarrassment for the users, not the library, and they need to invest in building in-house expertise and *not* pushing resources into artifactory or whatever
in reply to Glyph

thank you - well put. we've been objecting to this framing for a while now, but have struggled to articulate it in terms that others relate to...
in reply to Irenes (many)

@ireneista @filippo FWIW I also think that yelling at Filippo, of all people, for using what is basically industry-standard terminology at this point is perhaps a bit overheated 😀
in reply to Glyph

oh, yeah, we're not here to yell at anyone! sorry if it came off that way
in reply to Irenes (many)

@ireneista @filippo I thought maybe jcoglan’s “second idea” chaser was perhaps a bit too arch 😀. But I am not trying to yell at anyone either, just pointing out that a good half of the people who use this language are also actively dedicating huge amounts of their energy to improve the ecosystem in concrete ways, Filippo included.
in reply to Glyph

@ireneista @filippo (There *is* then the problem that some of the people who use this language *are* implicitly trying to extort free labor from already-overstressed volunteers; but very few of those are going to be on Mastodon in the first place.)

(edit: "policymaker" isn't the right term, see replies)

in reply to ✧✦Catherine✦✧

@whitequark @ireneista @filippo I… can see why you’d say that, but I think that’s a bad-faith reading of what she’s trying to say in that thread. Personally I read this as “you have to engage with this in terms that are legible to those in power, or they (not me) will attempt to impose direct liability on you, which is stupid and counterproductive and I am trying to stop”

(FWIW I don’t think I *agree* with her either, but we are getting pretty far afield now…)

in reply to Glyph

@glyph @ireneista @filippo when someone starts out by telling me that i'm exactly like a rock in a mineral supply chain, why should i read anything else they write as charitably as possible?
in reply to ✧✦Catherine✦✧

@whitequark @ireneista @filippo fair enough I suppose. Personally I am working on writing something longer form about all of this so I feel an obligation to absorb all perspectives as earnestly as possible but I did not mean to transmit that obligation, just sharing my own reading
in reply to Glyph

@glyph @whitequark @ireneista I am very tired of getting yelled at (not by Irenes, their post was fine) and would rather go do some maintenance but...

There is a world-class talking-past-each-other going on right now. Maintainers feel exploited and rightfully push back on over-entitled companies by claiming there is no supply chain. Meanwhile, companies do need a supply chain that no one is selling them.

When folks say "they should pay for it"... how? Have they actually tried to tabletop it?

in reply to Filippo Valsorda

@glyph @whitequark @ireneista

We could just say "sucks to be a company, fuck the shareholders, capitalism boo" and while I agree that late stage capitalism is a problem, it's our current reality, and I enjoy living in a world with hospitals and an electrical grid and food delivery and internet banking.

So yeah, unpaid maintainers should not be a supply chain, but we don't collectively get out of that by saying "we are not, solved" if there are no alternative suppliers. For better or worse.

in reply to Filippo Valsorda

@filippo The idea is not for open source, but for companies to have proper auditing and risk mitigation, with recurring training to refresh. These companies failed at this basic aspect and the onus is on them, not open source projects. They failed to audit the dependency they are using, either through negligence and/or incompetence someone deemed it acceptable risk.
