Uh ho. Us Green councillors at SDC are in a tight spot. People have complained about Dale Vince and his draping the Ecotricity HQ in the the Palestinan flag.
A statement’s been put out and the Green Party stressed it had no option but to police planning regulations as required by legislation – but that the leading group of councillors at Ebley Mill supports Ecotricity’s move.
The Council had received public complaints about the Ecotricity flag, so SDC officers were obliged to take advice on the matter. This confirmed that the Palestinian flag is not listed among those with automatic or deemed consent, because Palestine is not a state recognised by the UK Government (unlike in 147 of 193 UN Member States). As a result, the Council has had to invite Ecotricity to submit a planning application for the flag on its building.Unfortunately, this disappointing outcome is not a matter where political leadership can intervene: councillors, even those who are part of a council’s administration, have no influence over this aspect of planning policy – rightly so, as politics should be kept out of such planning decisions.
Regardless of the action SDC is required to take as Local Planning Authority under national legislation, the Green group of councillors and the rest of Stroud District Green Party support Ecotricity in the decision to display the Palestinian flag on their building.
The Ecotricity flag is a symbol of solidarity with the Palestinian people, and a protest against the violations of international law and the catastrophic violence being inflicted on them by the Israeli government. We join with Ecotricity in calling for an end to the genocide in Gaza and we share their support for all civilians caught up in the conflict. We will be writing to Dale Vince to express this support.
The Greens believe that this situation highlights the pressing need for the UK government to formally recognise the State of Palestine.
Recognising Palestine is a vital step towards justice, equality and a sustainable peace.
It demonstrates a commitment to international law and a balanced approach to the region.

I originally thought the insect in this image was a dragonfly, but now I suspect it’s probably a grasshopper. Either way, it clearly caught the attention of this northern mockingbird (Mimus polyglottos). They seem to be getting along quite well—though, to be fair, that’s probably only true from the mockingbird’s perspective.

What we need is anonymous proof of unique human.
It's a hard unsolved problem but of great value.
Easier on an anonymous #AutonomiDweb, but still unsolved. I think there are ways forward there which while not 'proof', could at least make it harder or more costly to operate fake humans at scale.

This is exciting and if you want to get an incredible introduction to type theory from first principles it's one of my more favorite texts on the subject. It does use C++ as it's reference language but you don't really need to know very much C++ in order to appreciate the text. IIRC it introduces what you need to know as it uses various features.

I must say, I have always loved the high-power RF-excited sulphur lamps, which were used at the National Air and Space Museum for a while. They failed in the marketplace, but not because there was anything wrong with the underlying concept.
I have an old ring-style home fluorescent light which had a promethium radioactive source for quick-starting, but it's very dead now.

They were only really used in huge lighting applications like convention centers though, so it might be impracticable to make a video about them.

in reply to Technology Connections • • •About this spontaneous ionising of the gas in the tube... A tiny amount of an ionising compound would do that. Say, for instance, an alpha emitter. Preferably one with a long half life, you don't want a tube to stop igniting after a few months.
Think about a geiger counter. That is a gas discharge tube, without an igniter, and the ignition is caused by nearby radioactive substances.
A few milligrams of thorium-232 (paint on the inside) or a tiny bit of krypton-85 gas will do.
