So you replace a fuse with an iron nail, which causes a transistor to run so hot it burns a hole in the PCB. What do you do? Apparently some fine repair tech came to this problem and the apparent solution was to jumper over the now totally burned traces and then add wires and hang the now missing transistor from those. Because why not?
This is a WhiteStar pinball platform driver board I got for spares long ago, but I think it's glorious in all of its tech goreness.

in reply to vga256 • • •@vga256 We'll never really know if that had ever worked, the board came with the game as a spare and rest of it wasn't in much better shape. Looking at the jumpers it could've worked technically, but with the fuse being jumpered over, I can only assume the "repaired" part would've caught fire just as easily.
Pinball repair has always been bit of a dark magic. A lot of guys in the early 90s were from the EM era and didn't really understand how the solid state games actually worked, so they'd often fix the symptoms rather than look for the actual cause and then just reminiscence the good old days while cursing the impossible to fix boards. That's how I actually got my first ever job at a arcade operator, when his guy couldn't figure out a fault and the total newbie me banged his head against the wall until it worked again.

interesting history - I hadn't thought about EM games much, as I had never really played one (being an 80s kid). i had a similar start with arcade repair/restoration 😀

in reply to vga256 • • •@vga256 The old guys got pretty far with EM game skills in the solid state world. The playfield mechanics were the same and the solid state control don't need constant maintenance like all the moving parts in an EM pin. It was weird to talk with some, who could name every coil type from the top of their head and at the same time didn't even understand the rough principle how a solid state pin runs.
But it's not that much easier the other way around. I'm from the computerised era and it's very clear how a coil fires, from the game software giving the command to the PIA chip energising one output to cause the whole chain of things until a transistor fires. But an EM game is like code in hardware with no error checking and bad contacts adding randomness to everything.
I have owned 2 EM games in my life, first one I got working but sold later, the next one is waiting for the day I feel brave enough to do it again.

in reply to Ari [APz] Sovijärvi • • •I love working on EM games. My first pin was an EM game, and for a while I ran the EM group at the Dutch Pinball Association, with the late Henk de Jager teaching us young'uns about EM maintenance.
They're so lovingly direct, and a well adjusted EM game needs little maintenance, as long as it is played regularly.
I also love poring over the schematics, reverse engineering the clever tricks the designers used to implement the game mechanics.
I regret getting rid of that EM game when we emigrated to Sweden.
