We all know, how crappy the common #Mercator projection for world #maps represents areas, inflating them with distance from the equator.
What many people don't know, is why this projection is still so popular:
The shortest path between two points on the globe, is a straight line on the map.
I reckon, this is useful.
In all other projections, the shortest paths are curves.
In #Maths, we say, the Mercator projection preserves angles, not areas.

True: The shortest distance between two points on a smooth manifold is the geodetic, which is in the general case not exactly a straight line in the Mercator projection.
However: Before GPS, if you wanted to plot a course for your ship or plane, you would determine the right angle to the pole and then keep it.
For not too long distances, this straight line on the Mercator map is close enough and, most importantly, easy to follow.

Women and people from vulnerable communities need privacy. I'm not either, but I work for a newsroom that reports on the government, and there's absolutely no way I'm sharing my location online anymore.
I don't know that we should be encouraging people to share identifiable information onto the public #fediverse right now. Let's build much stronger privacy first.

Der Háifoss, was für ein Wasserfall. Mit seinen 122m ist er der dritthöchste Wasserfall Islands. Vom Parkplatz aus kann man hinunter in die Schlucht laufen und so dem Háifoss sehr nahe kommen. Die Kraft und Dynamik ist beeindruckend. Einer meiner Favoriten der Wasserfälle. Bei meinem Besuch ließ ein asiatisches Ehepaar dort Hochzeitsbilder machen.

A sudden flood in the river flowing from Tibet has caused extensive damage in the Timure area of the Rasuwagadhi customs region. The flood has swept away the Friendship Bridge that connects the Nepal-China border with Tibet.
Due to the massive flood in the Lende River, located at the Nepal-China border in Rasuwa district, the Friendship Bridge linking Nepal and China has been completely washed away. The flood has also carried away several goods containers and electric vehicles (EVs) parked at the Rasuwagadhi customs office.
Similarly, cargo trucks on the Chinese side of the border have been submerged as the floodwaters blocked their passage.
There are fears of significant damage to both life and property due to this natural disaster.
We sincerely urge all brothers and sisters residing along the banks of the Bhotekoshi and Trishuli rivers to move to safe locations. 🙏🙏
