Yesterday and today have been good for butterflies.
These all came to visit our garden & stopped for a while.
Makes me glad we can provide food for butterflies when the news is full of their decline & habitat loss.
I’m telling myself that the comma is the same one we saw as a caterpillar munching our gooseberry leaves.

This is a photo of a male ruby throated hummingbird hovering next to a nectar feeder. Each year, 1 male and 1 female hummingbird settle somewhere in my yard and battle over the nectar feeder. In a little while, there will be a bunch of baby hummingbirds fighting amongst themselves. I have been trying for a month to get a picture of the guy, but he has been quite the artful dodger. Until today. The light, as usual, was terrible and so his wings are blurry.

Out of all of the samples I’ve collected around the country, #Florida clays have been the most difficult to incorporate into my work. From what I’ve read, even Indigenous Floridians (especially coastal south) had to find unusual ways to work with the #clay, including adding cattail fur and sea sponge spicules.

I’m persevering because I want to make art that helps other Floridians appreciate our unique geology. I’ve learned so much just from handling and processing it. But boy is it weird.

The object on the left is a test tile made from commercial red stoneware clay, brushed with a decorating slip made from clay foraged from a construction site in Manatee County, Florida. The surface is light yellow, a bit shiny and crumbly. The slip has peeled from the surface in many places and there is an overall cracked pattern that ceramicists call “crawling.” On the right, the clay sample from which the slip was made—a gray piece of earth with a bit of brown. The sample contains more sand than clay and has a gritty look to it. Many clays I’ve tested in Florida have given similar results. The gray-to-yellow transformation is common and so is the crawling surface, which is an indication of very high silica content. By contrast, a very typical result from many other places in the country would be an iron-rich clay with low sand content that melts into a smooth, dark, iron-red surface.
