Its seldom if ever that I would paraphrase Margaret Thatcher in a positive manner, but this morning I'll break that convention (just this once, I hope):
The ideal strategy to start to dissasemble the ReformUK 'bandwagon" would be to rob the Far Right of the oxygen of publicity.... something our media are not only uninterested in doing, but actively working against.
If only they covered the Green Party (same number of MPs, more councillors, albeit no Councils) to the same intensity!

VW in Brasilien wegen sklavenähnlicher Arbeit verurteilt

Every time I see a legislative incentive argued "to protect children," I feel like it's because they couldn't think of an actual argument. So instead, they spin it to be about the one thing that every good, pearl-clutching citizen will get behind.
Drag bans, age verification, chat control... And in Norway, it was leveraged against *taxing the rich.*
They act like parodies of themselves and too many people are just eating it up.

in reply to Emeritus Prof Christopher May • • •I think the kinds of things that will undermine and disintegrate the Reform Party are:
Violence by avowed supporters
Criminal damage by avowed supporters
Reform councillors caught in fraud.
Reform councillors refusing to treat with local press
Reform councillors failing to meet legal obligations as councillors, or the whole Council
Reform MPs fighting over expenses.
Many of these are already in play.
Emeritus Prof Christopher May reshared this.

in reply to Estarriol, Terrorist Dragon • • •@Thebratdragon
I'm far more concerned at retired political war horses that were either left or left of centre fiddling about, messing with core fundamentals like ECHR and the Refugee Convention and Protocol because it undermines the reality that there are 51 million people displaced globally and we're worried about a few that end up with us.
A lot of that is the unilateral removal of Aid & no-one has a plan.

Yes, I wasn't thinking of the Stephen Rea voicing of Adams.... more that underlying notion that (as you say) the coverage is already skewed towards Farage & his gang.... and with less publicity for them, there would be space for other parties that have significant support (such as the Greens)
StuartB
in reply to Emeritus Prof Christopher May • • •They were ready to print/broadcast all of Farage's lies, usually uncritically, but wouldn't do the same for people trying to get the public to realise the nature of the problems we were sleepwalking in to.

in reply to Emeritus Prof Christopher May • • •Farage is an accomplished self publicist.
He hands journalists the sort of ready to go content that helps them fill their programmes and pages. News conferences and other publicity events guaranteed to contain a bit of drama. Journalists love a bit of drama.
Sure none of it stands up to intelligent scrutiny but that doesn't matter. If some journalists rake over the drivel he gets more exposure.
The sort of people he appeals to are not going to be looking at the sort of news outlets that will do analysis.
Is it really the fault of the news media? Perhaps other parties such as #GreenParty and #LiberalDemocrats should be doing more to attract media coverage. Just no more Ed Davey falling off paddle boards.
Emeritus Prof Christopher May
in reply to Leigh Silvester • • •@leighms
Yes, I think that's a fair point; the financial constraints on many new media has led journalists to never look a free story in the mouth.... and as you say, while it may be unfair, its also incumbent on other parties to raise their communications game - the Scottish Greens have, I think, been better than some...
Alex@rtnVFRmedia Suffolk UK
in reply to Emeritus Prof Christopher May • • •@leighms for instance Corbyn and Sultana made a good start with their "your party" (even if it has a daft name at the moment), but now seem to have gone silent after a month -their website is not updated, they've not even said when their autumn conference will be and don't even appear to be communicating with each other
That Zack chap from the Green Party seems promising too, but again they seem to be surprisingly quiet (although they do at least put out regular press releases which is something)
Leigh Silvester
in reply to Alex@rtnVFRmedia Suffolk UK • • •@vfrmedia
It is a difficult balance to get right.
If you are too populist and concentrate on a good spectacle over facts that would not play well with your educated supporters. Obviously not a problem for Farage and the demographic he is aiming at.
Watched a video posted by Natalie Bennett for the #GreenParty on Blue Sky in response to Jeremy Hunt and the report suggesting over diagnosis of children's mental health conditions.
10/10 for worthiness. 1/10; for news impact. Not noticed any news outlets pick up on it.
Hopefully Zak will help them cut through.

Hmmm.... I agree recently the LibDems have suffered from a skewed news coverage, but I would say (without looking at any longitude data) that the Greens have suffered more and for longer.... but I take the point that the LibDems, post-coalition, have been often ignored or treated as a marginal party

The excuse they use for coverage is that they follow polling data rather than seats, and as much as I don't like the end result, I do think it's the right approach- polling is a slightly better measure of public opinion but it doesn't necessarily track 1:1 to seats, as I'm sure every Lib Dem will tell you.
Of course, it could be the reason one is polling better than the other is because one gets given so much airtime...
Emeritus Prof Christopher May
in reply to beemoh • • •@beemoh
yes, there is a feedback loop in there somewhere - a bit of extra coverage & that shifts the polls a little, giving more coverage, moving the polls some more.... and so on - the key thing is those initial steps when editorial decisions make or break early coverage expansion
