Ich musste dadurch gerade daran denken, dass unser Patenkind mir vor Jahren bei irgendeiner Feier die Nägel bunt lackieren wollte und natürlich auch durfte - mit allem, was das Arsenal der Mutter halt so hergab. Das anwesende, tendenziell eher konservativ geprägte Umfeld war teilweise recht irritiert, einer meinte sogar „dass Du das mit Dir machen lässt".
Wenn's einem nicht gefällt: Ok. Es geht ja aber nicht um ein Tattoo. Auf Wunsch ist die Farbe schnell wieder weg. Wer es als Mann nicht mal kurzzeitig verkraftet, Farbe auf den Nägeln zu haben … Ich war auf jeden Fall damals von den Kommentaren sehr befremdet.

The words ‘fluent’, ‘fluid’, and ‘influence’ come from the Latin verb ‘fluere’, which means “to flow”.
‘Fluere’ and ‘to flow’ look very similar, so they must be etymologically related, right?
No! They’re entirely unrelated.

I notice in many languages, many of the FLOW infinitives (and I think this applies to verbs in general) end in an -en sound. Except in English, which instead puts "To" at the start.
Why does the infinitive in English have a "To"? Does it have to do with the -en ending being occupied by the -ing sound on the end of gerunds?
@PKYo In Middle English, the infinitive was 'flowen'. However, as English lost its endings, the infinitive first became 'flowe' ("flow-uh") and then 'flow'.
Meanwhie, the preposition 'to' became more and more part of the infinitive. Initially, it was only used to express purpose (as in 'he went to buy good') but it became an infinitive marker, except when the infintive is combined with certain helping verbs, such as 'can': 'I can come'.
The -ing ending has its own separate history.
