I'm getting back into amateur photography and I've gotten myself a manual 35mm(w/APS/C) lens to try and shoot with that range and just practise composition. Something I find quite challenging is how to compose a shot in the "real world". I know the rules of composition, but those are 2d, and you often don't get to choose exactly how to compose. Also in the real world there aren't boundaries like there is on an image. I find that choice quite overwhelming.
So the question: How do you go about composing a shot? What decisions do you make ahead of time vs what do you do in the moment? Do you start with the subject and go from there, or do you decide that based on how things are composed in the real world? What do you do when you can't quite reach a perfect spot to take the image, or there's something annoying in the way?
